Job description

ADGA is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Writer to support a Department of National Defence initiative within the National Capital Region. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, developing, reviewing, and maintaining a wide range of technical documentation for complex projects and systems. This includes user manuals, help text, requirements documentation, technical documentation, web content, and other project-related materials. 

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience translating complex technical information into clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate documentation. Working closely with developers, subject matter experts, project teams, and stakeholders, the Senior Technical Writer will ensure documentation meets established standards, accurately reflects technical capabilities, and supports the needs of end users and project stakeholders.

This is a proactive recruitment initiative, with potential start dates in the coming weeks or months, contingent on contract award.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Document and maintain help text, user manuals, requirements documentation, technical documentation, web content, and other project-related materials. 
  • Review documentation standards and assess existing project documentation for completeness, quality, consistency, and accuracy. 
  • Determine documentation requirements and develop plans and approaches to meet project and stakeholder needs. 
  • Gather and validate information regarding system features, functionality, and technical capabilities from developers and subject matter experts. 
  • Assess the intended audience for documentation and develop statements of purpose and scope for required documentation. 
  • Develop document structures, including tables of contents, and write, edit, and organize technical content. 
  • Verify the accuracy of technical information through direct use and review of the systems, products, or materials being documented. 
  • Prepare or coordinate the preparation of illustrations, diagrams, photographs, and other visual materials required to support documentation. 
  • Design and format documentation to ensure clarity, usability, consistency, and adherence to established standards. 
  • Coordinate document reviews and gather feedback from technical and project stakeholders. 
  • Update and revise documentation based on approved stakeholder feedback. 
  • Prepare and deliver final versions of technical documentation. 
  • Prepare summaries of technical documentation reviewed during project information-gathering activities. 
  • Develop statements of purpose and scope for projects or requirements as identified by project leadership. 
  • Collaborate closely with technical teams, developers, subject matter experts, and stakeholders to ensure documentation accurately reflects technical and business requirements. 
  • A minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience as a Technical Writer performing responsibilities consistent with a senior-level technical writing role. 
  • A minimum of 10 years of direct experience performing technical writing activities related to the key responsibilities outlined above. 
  • Demonstrated experience performing at least seven of the following activities: 
    • Developing technical documentation, user manuals, help text, requirements documentation, or web content. 
    • Reviewing documentation standards and existing documentation. 
    • Identifying documentation requirements and developing documentation plans. 
    • Gathering technical information from developers and subject matter experts. 
    • Assessing documentation audiences and defining document purpose and scope. 
    • Developing document structures and writing or editing technical content. 
    • Validating technical information through direct use or testing of documented systems or materials. 
    • Coordinating the development of illustrations, diagrams, photographs, or other visual documentation. 
    • Designing and formatting technical documentation. 
    • Coordinating stakeholder reviews and incorporating feedback. 
    • Preparing final versions of technical documentation. 
  • Demonstrated experience supporting multiple complex projects and developing documentation throughout the project lifecycle. 
  • Strong ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and audience-appropriate content. 
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, and communication skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with technical teams, developers, subject matter experts, and project stakeholders. 
  • Ability to manage multiple documentation deliverables and competing priorities.
