Job Description

Accountability:

  • Reporting to the Manger of Train Operations, The Supervisor of Train Operations is an accountable member of management that will ensure that transit activities are delivered in a safe and efficient manner. 
  • As a front-line member of staff, this role is key to delivering safe operations, customer-focused service, and on-time performance across the GO Rail Network
  • Requires a solid understanding of railroad operations in a highly regulated environment, with an exceptional ability to achieve successful outcomes.
  • The ideal candidate will be committed to achieving ONxpress’ objectives, fostering a positive work environment for all employees, and will be dedicated to a continuous performance improvement culture. 

Responsibilities

  • Will monitor and take action to ensure the highest standard of performance of train operating crew members, including rules compliance, safe train handling, adherence to schedules, and mechanical knowledge of the equipment.
  • Will support crews by initiating remedial action to address substandard operating practices.
  • Will evaluate train crew members’ performance through the provision of efficiency tests, rules compliance audits, and other management processes and take corrective actions as required.
  • Will be available to respond to all incidents and service disruptions and will take responsibility to coordinate and support the on-scene activities when required to do so.
  • Will take an active role in incident investigations in conjunction with Metrolinx staff when necessary.
  • Will act as a front-line resource for employees with regards to train operating rules, rail safety regulations, or other relevant policies and procedures. 
  • Will be required to perform duties at various locations and facilities across the GO Rail network, with various shifts and off-days.
  • Must be able to work independently, in consultation with ONxpress staff in the Network Operations Control Centre. 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, written and verbal, and will complete written reports, assessments, and other documentation.
  • Must be able to apply their knowledge of applicable policies, legislation, and regulations as they apply to transit service, including the Railway Safety Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and the Employment Standards Act.

Qualifications

Education & Qualifications:

  • Completion of a degree in related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of five years’ direct experience in railway operations or public transit supervision. 
  • Must have, or be able to rapidly acquire, CROR certification as a Conductor or Locomotive Engineer. 
  • First Aid and AED (considered an asset).

Competencies:

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work to coordinate activities and meet established schedules or project deadlines.
  • Able to travel to at all locations within the GO Network in various shifts as required.
  • Ability to drill down, understand root cause and resolve complex issues.
  • Willing to be available for on-call responsibilities.
  • Willing to be available as required on a 7x24 basis.
  • Able to work under pressure with a forward-thinking, solution-focused mindset.
  • Innovative and creative individual who works well in a Team-based, entrepreneurial, and diverse environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel is an asset.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • IMS and First Aid qualifications considered assets.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work autonomously

Safety-Sensitive and Safety Critical Positions: This role is designated as Safety Critical under the Railway Safety Act and Safety-Sensitive under OOI’s Fitness for Duty Policy. Applicants selected for this position will be required to successfully complete pre-employment drug testing and medical assessments (as applicable) and will be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing under relevant circumstances in accordance with OOI’s Fitness for Duty Policy. This position is also subject to ongoing legislated medical requirements pursuant to the Canadian Railway Medical Guidelines. Medical certification and recertification will be required in accordance with the Railway Safety Act Medical Guidelines. Additionally, other workplace medical assessments may be deemed a requirement for this position.
