About Our Opportunity

Province House is seeking an outgoing, energetic, enthusiastic and team-orientated individual with exceptional communication and time management skills to perform duties as a Legislative tour guide.

As a Legislative tour guide you will interpret the legislative system and the history of Province House. From the architecture to artwork, the building is home to historic artifacts and displays.

Offering a guided tour of this historic building provides an excellent opportunity to make use of public speaking skills, as well as second language skills and learn more about Nova Scotia and its government. More than 6,500 people visited Province House for guided and self-guided tours in 2025.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Greeting visitors and collaborating with staff and security to provide a positive visitor experience.
  • Delivering half-hour guided tours back-to-back and engaging visitors in the public areas.
  • Engaging with the public both inside and outside Province House (within the legislative precinct) to increase visitation.
  • Learning historical and significant facts about Province House and the House of Assembly to deliver public education and answer questions.
  • Consistently communicating in a nonpartisan, respectful and professional manner.
  • Handing out printed informational material for visitors and replenishing displays.
  • Recording the number of visitors and encouraging visitors to sign the visitors’ book.
  • Placing and removing temporary outdoor and indoor signage, displays and stanchions as directed. Must be able to lift 40lbs.
  • Standing for long periods and ascending and descending stairs may be required. Province House is wheelchair accessible.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing conditions will be necessary. The building routinely hosts events and meetings which may restrict access to public areas.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate your knowledge and interest in the legislative system and possess an understanding of history, art, and architecture. You will demonstrate the ability to work with children, youth, and adults of all ages and value the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of work. You possess strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Fluently bilingual (French & English) candidates are preferred.

At times, this role may be working independently or in a team environment. As the successful candidate you must clearly demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics to always work effectively with the public and legislative staff in a respectful and professional manner.

While not required, previous experience in a museum or tourism/hospitality sector is considered an asset.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Guides must be available to work weekday and weekend shifts from June 22 to October 30 on a casual basis, as required. This includes one-week of training. If the House of Assembly sits during this period, public tours may be reduced.

Hours of operation for guided tours of Province House are from 10:00am to 4:00pm on weekdays and occasional weekends as required. Daily shifts are not necessarily consecutive over the period. A full schedule will be provided in advance and is subject to change. Tours are offered on Canada Day and Natal Day.
