Your Opportunity

The successful performance of a project depends on appropriate planning and execution. Project controls is responsible for project metrics such as time, cost, and resources as well as project revenue and cash flow. This position encompasses the people, processes and tools used to plan, manage, and mitigate cost and schedule issues and risks that may impact a project.

We currently have an opportunity for a highly motivated Intermediate Project Controller to join our buildings group. We are seeking an individual with demonstrated experience in project controls including knowledge of project management processes and project life cycles. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, is detail-oriented, has excellent computer software skills and enjoys working in a supportive team environment.

Your Key Responsibilities

As a Project Controller, you must be flexible, supportive, proactive, and attentive to detail as well as manage and prioritize multiple tasks in order to meet and balance deadlines and priorities. You will be able to analyze information and provide timely standard and customized cost control reports. The successful candidates’ responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Gain proficient knowledge of the Stantec Project Management tools and understanding and following Stantec’s over-arching project management framework processes to become a resource for Project Managers and supporting ISO 9001 compliance.

  • Assist the Project Management team with work breakdown structure, work plan development, and analysis of work plan against schedule.

  • Contribute to proposal development ensuring contractual and operational compliance.

  • Assist with contract and legal compliance review.

  • Assist with subconsultant agreements compilation.

  • Understand integration between cost and schedule.

  • Setup and maintain cost performance against baseline schedule.

  • Setup and maintain cost controls from project initiation to close out.

  • Routinely provide standardized, accurate cost reports for project managers.

  • Validate source data and ensure integrity of processes affecting project success such as project coding, budget allocation, A/R & A/P project related activity.

  • Facilitate change order management with Project Managers and coordinate inputs via the wider project team.

  • Coordinate and update project estimate-to-complete (ETC) requirements with Project Managers and project teams.

  • Knowledge and use of earned value principles, including but not limited to CPI, SPI, EAC and variance.

  • Project invoicing as outlined in contract requirements, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Monitor accounts receivables to ensure prompt payment per the contract terms – coordinate with the client as appropriate.

  • Prepare financial summaries and participate in project governance meetings with Project Managers as required.

  • Perform thorough QA/QC on all deliverables.

  • Provide mentoring and training to Junior Project Controllers as needed.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Understanding of the project management life cycle and project controls processes and procedures.

  • Must be self-motivated, possess strong interpersonal skills, and maintain a positive mindset; effectively communicate with clients, subconsultants, and staff at all levels.

  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate numerous project tasks in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications.

  • Ability to review and interpret financial reports.

  • Demonstrated experience producing work breakdown structures, cash flow projections, earned value, and variance reports.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and act upon the requirements outlined in agreements and contracts.

  • Must be proficient in MS Office skills, with advanced skills in MS Excel.

  • Experience in Power BI would be an asset.

  • Experience with Financial/Cost systems (Oracle or Similar, Power BI, etc.) is preferred.

  • Experience with MS Project or P6 would be considered and asset.

  • Prior work in project controls / project assistant role on projects exceeding $5M design / $50M construction fee is a plus.

Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in business, engineering, or finance preferred with a minimum of 5 years’ experience or equivalent combination of skills and experience.

Experience in an architecture / engineering firm or construction related company preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may require travel and include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
