An opportunity exists in Stantec's Ottawa, ON office for a highly motivated Intermediate Structural Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team. In this role you will be responsible for the design and execution of projects ranging in size and complexity, with a focus on municipal, federal, industrial, healthcare, commercial and educational projects. The successful candidate will also assist in developing and maintaining new and existing clients, and satisfying customer requirements.
Responsibilities
Prepare engineering designs from conceptual design, through tender to construction.
Prepare detailed design calculations, technical specifications, and engineering drawings for concrete, steel, masonry and wood building structures and technical inspection and condition assessment reports.
Manage construction administration activities effectively, including timely responses to RFIs, change orders, and site inquiries while meeting project deadlines.
Work with team members in determining viable solutions for design issues.
Work to and meet project timelines and budgets.
Coordinate design work with other disciplines, other offices, and other project team members.
Support Construction Administration personnel, including: field reviews and co-ordination, review and issuance of change orders, clarifications and RFI responses on an occasional or as required basis.
Coach Junior Staff members informally or through formal presentations.
Participate in business development activities.
Assist the management team in developing tools and techniques for the execution of daily duties.
Qualifications
Minimum 8 years of post-graduation experience in a structural design environment and possess a thorough understanding of the design of various building structures, including: steel, concrete, masonry, and timber in accordance with Canadian codes and Standards.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products and experience with structural finite element engineering design software such as ETABS, SAP2000, and SAFE, with the ability to critically evaluate, validate, and apply analysis results using sound engineering judgment in addition to familiarity with cloud-based BIM systems.
Great attention to detail and a strong knowledge of the building systems and the construction industry practices with a proven record of working in complex building projects.
Experience in earthquake engineering design, seismic upgrade of existing buildings, earth retaining and civil marine struc tures, Industrial, environmental, and municipal infrastructure will be considered an asset.
Registration as a Professional Engineer within the Province of Ontario and possess extensive knowledge of all relevant codes and standards, and various building materials.
Ability to work independently and take responsibility of the work and be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Strong professional judgment and willingness to raise concerns or propose alternatives when appropriate and strong appreciation for constructability, coordination, and practical design solutions.
Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with evolving codes, standards, and industry best practices.
Strong leadership, time management, project management, communication and team building skills are required.
Working knowledge of Project Management fundamentals would be considered an asset.
Registration as a Professional Engineer within the Province of Quebec is considered an asset.
Ability to communicate in French is considered an asset.
Eligibility to obtain and maintain Government of Canada security clearance, as required for federal and sensitive projects.
