Registered Veterinary Technologist, RVT

Location: Vancouver, BC

Department: Internal Medicine

Schedule: Monday to Thursday

Compensation: $25.00 to $38.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience.

We are expanding our Internal Medicine service at Vancouver Animal Emergency and Referral Centre and are seeking a dedicated, full-time Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) to join this exciting, growing referral service. The Registered Veterinary Technologists in our hospital have an interesting and varied workload, managing a wide variety of cases, offering a stimulating and challenging experience. In addition to utilizing all of your basic technical skills, you will apply skills not commonly used in general practice as well as have the opportunity to learn new, advanced skills.

The position is extremely dynamic and offers an interesting and diverse day-to-day experience! The internal medicine service focuses on excellence in patient care and client communication. This position is ideal for someone who has above-average attention to detail, organizational skills and a strong desire to learn the “why” behind tasks and procedures that are completed. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with an interest in complex medical cases, as the opportunity to learn and grow in the field is second-to-none.

The successful candidate will be joining a close-knit team who work well together, and we are looking for a great fit to make our team even stronger.

Education:

  • Completion of the Registered Veterinary Technologist/Technician Program

  • Successful completion of the VTNE

RVT Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Extensive history taking during initial consultations

  • Updating medical records with histories, vital signs, and weights.

  • Creating and discussing treatment plans

  • Answer the owner and referring veterinarian-related questions

  • Explaining a variety of medical procedures and conditions

  • Client phone calls and maintain regular client follow-up

  • Triage patients appropriately

  • Animal restraint of dogs and cats

  • Familiarity with dog and cat breeds and breed disposition to disease

  • Provide specialized nursing care for ill animals

  • Proficient in medical procedures such as subcutaneous fluids, IM/SQ/IV injections, radiographs, administering medications, fluids, and blood products, blood typing and cross-matching, maintaining IV catheters, etc.

  • Administration and monitoring of general anesthesia for a variety of internal medicine procedures

  • Experience with advanced imaging (CT & Fluoroscopy), or keen to learn

  • Drug calculations

  • Logging controlled drugs and familiarity with Cubex are assets

  • Fill prescriptions per the Internal Medicine Specialist's instructions

  • Performing in hospital laboratory procedures

  • Preparing and submitting lab samples to various outside laboratories

  • Various cleaning duties & stocking clinic medical supplies

  • Attend staff meetings

  • Assisting the Specialist in any other appropriate capacity

Skills and knowledge:

  • Previous experience in an emergency/specialty setting is beneficial, but it is not a requirement. Experience in a GP setting is also an asset. Recent RVT Grads who are motivated and confident in their abilities and possess above-average technical experience are also encouraged to apply.

  • Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.

  • Awareness of the hospital's policies and procedures

  • Know and use standard medical and business abbreviations

  • Have physical strength and ability to stand for an entire shift when needed & lift up to 30lbs
