Travel: Ability to travel within Canada as required

About the Opportunity

An established national organization in the green building and sustainability sector is seeking a Vice President, Product Development to join its Senior Leadership Team. This executive role will oversee the development, innovation, and lifecycle management of industry-recognized green building standards and frameworks, including zero-carbon and high-performance building programs.

As the senior technical authority within the organization’s standards division, you will shape the evolution of frameworks that influence how buildings are designed, constructed, and operated across Canada. This role blends strategic product leadership, technical rigor, governance alignment, and executive-level decision-making.

You will operate with a high degree of independence and judgment - ensuring standards integrity, market relevance, and disciplined product evolution aligned with organizational mission and Canadian market realities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the evolution of the organization’s green building standards portfolio, with primary accountability for zero-carbon standards and associated tools.
  • Establish structured product planning, roadmaps, update cycles, and prioritization frameworks aligned with governance best practices.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority for flagship programs, exercising independent judgment on complex or high-risk technical matters.
  • Safeguard the credibility, consistency, and clarity of standards, verification pathways, and technical guidance.
  • Translate applied research, market signals, and industry trends into disciplined product enhancements.
  • Ensure standards remain technically rigorous, scalable, regionally applicable, and aligned with evolving carbon and energy performance expectations.
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute to corporate strategy, operating plans, budgeting, and performance reporting.
  • Liaise with steering committees, technical advisory groups, and external business partners supporting rating systems and standards delivery.
  • Provide direction and mentorship to direct reports, including senior technical leaders and analysts.
  • Oversee vendor relationships, external contractors, and key business agreements. Identify capability gaps and inform resourcing strategies to maintain program readiness.
  • Represent the organization as a national technical authority, contributing expertise to policy-relevant discussions and industry engagement through established governance channels.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in green building, building performance, sustainability standards, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years leading managers or senior technical professionals
  • Deep technical knowledge of operational and embodied carbon, building energy systems, HVAC, electrification, and performance-based standards
  • Demonstrated experience leading standards development, product management, or technical program lifecycles
  • Strong strategic planning and roadmap development capabilities
  • Proven ability to exercise independent technical and strategic judgment within governance frameworks
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to executive, industry, and policy audiences
  • Post-secondary education in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, Environmental Studies, Sustainability, or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Advanced professional accreditation related to building performance or sustainability considered an asset
  • Familiarity with nationally recognized green building standards preferred
