Your Opportunity

Our Building Specialty Services group is seeking a Building Science Engineer to join our growing Alberta team in our Calgary Office. This role is well suited to a developing professional who is ready to take ownership of projects while continuing to grow technically, professionally, and as a client-facing consultant.

In this role, you will work alongside other building science professionals while independently managing and delivering assigned projects from initiation through completion. You’ll be involved in a wide range of work including building envelope pre-design and design, testing, commissioning, collaboration with architects on new construction design reviews, construction reviews and administration, and forensic investigations. Your Key Responsibilities

With support from senior and other staff as needed, you will:

  • Manage and deliver assigned building science projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and coordination

  • Perform building envelope design, third-party design reviews, and building envelope commissioning services for new construction and rehabilitation projects

  • Prepare and coordinate contract drawings, details, and technical specifications

  • Review design documents, shop drawings, and trade submittals for conformance with good building practice related to: - Water intrusion

  • Air leakage

  • Vapor diffusion

  • Thermal performance

  • Differential movement

  • Conduct site reviews and field investigations to confirm construction aligns with approved designs and mock-ups

  • Prepare site visit reports, track deficiencies, and coordinate resolution with project teams

  • Perform and oversee field testing of building envelope assemblies (air leakage and water infiltration) and prepare test reports

  • Contribute to forensic investigations related to building envelope failures such as water leakage, air/vapour control problems, concrete deterioration / delamination, and other failures involving wall cladding and fenestration assemblies, roofing, below-grade foundations and parking garages, and other building elements.

  • Interface directly with architects, contractors, and sub-trades, escalating technical issues as required

  • Contribute to building condition assessments and report preparation; although not a primary role, review of reports and miscellaneous involvement will be required from time to time

  • Support proposal preparation, fee development, and business development initiatives, including direct involvement in sales and marketing with prospective and ongoing clients

  • Participate in internal training, mentoring, and technical knowledge sharing

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within a multidisciplinary team

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

  • Familiarity with Bluebeam, CAD, and/or Revit is an asset

  • Working knowledge of: - Energy codes

  • Rainscreen principles

  • Air barrier systems

  • Thermal performance of building envelopes

  • Willingness to perform regional travel and work on active construction sites

  • Valid driver’s license and clean motor vehicle record

Education and Experience

  • Typically 5–15 years of experience in building science, building envelope consulting, construction, or related fields, however, will consider candidates with both less and more experience.

  • Experience with review and repair of building envelope systems such as: - Roofing, wall cladding (including rainscreen design principals), below-grade waterproofing, concrete deterioration, fenestration

  • Systems involving liquid water, air, heat energy, and vapor control

  • Experience with energy performance modeling and code requirements, LEED requirements, and sustainable practices are all considered assets

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a related discipline

  • Required: Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or P.L.Eng.) with currently active registration in Alberta, or working toward registration with expected license within 12 months or less.
