Stantec Consulting Limited (Stantec) is seeking an Aviation Planner with the relevant experience and qualifications to join our Aviation Planning and Development team. We are seeking someone who is dynamic, motivated, possesses excellent problem-solving and communication skills, and has a strong work ethic. The candidate should demonstrate a desire for challenging assignments, advancement potential, and travel as well as a keen interest in business development opportunities associated with the Aviation Planning and Development team.

The selected individual will work with experienced aviation planners, engineers and architects, environmental and indigenous experts, and support staff. They will be responsible for contributing to the development of airport master plans, feasibility and economic studies, airport and aviation training services, aviation planning services including airport activity forecasting and air service development projects. They will also provide support for other team members in completing general planning tasks as assigned.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform research, gather data, and conduct field work and stakeholder engagement in support of airport planning studies.

  • Perform demand/capacity assessment and develop facility requirements for airfield, terminal or landside facilities including the utilization of simulation modelling.

  • Prepare and evaluate alternative development/concept plans for airfield, terminal, or landside facilities using CAD and other graphics software.

  • Prepare written reports, presentations and deliverables for airport planning studies.

  • Conduct aeronautical assessments, regulatory and aerodrome standards compliance and gap analyses, including preparation of reports, drawings, tables and figures.

  • Provide technical advice to planning and design teams, airports and airline clients, act as subject matter expert on airport operations

  • Prepare aviation/airport training materials as needed.

  • Prepare and present PowerPoint materials containing technical information to project staff, external consultants, airport clients, and other key stakeholders

  • Support the Aviation team in project pursuits/proposals and business development activities; and

  • Monitor industry advancements, aviation trends and incorporate best practices in airport planning.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

We are seeking someone with experience in or knowledge of all or most of the following areas:

  • Airside and landside planning include assessments of passenger and aircraft movement, forecasting and airport capacity analysis and facility requirements evaluation.

  • Airport master planning and related studies.

  • Simulation modelling techniques.

  • Airport/heliport planning principles and techniques.

  • Airport/heliport operations manuals (AOMs/HOMs) and safety management systems (SMS);

  • Project Management, particularly in the areas of managing clients and stakeholder expectations.

  • Airport management and aviation technical training.

  • Canadian, US and International standards for both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft activities.

Additional minimum qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of aviation industry trends and regulations

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to work in a team and coordinate with various stakeholders

  • Strong understanding of aviation operations, regulations, and airport planning principles to create effective and compliant plans.

  • Exceptional analytical skills to evaluate airport capacity, forecast demand and assess the feasibility of expansion projects.

  • Ability to balance multiple concurrent projects and tasks.

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, presentation and written communications skills.

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint); Ability to use AutoCAD software and other specialized tools to design airport layouts, facilities and infrastructure

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and with client organizations.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively liaise with airport staff, authorities, sub-consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders; and

  • Problem-solving skills to address potential challenges and issues that may arise during the planning and design stages.

Preferred qualifications are as follows:

  • Knowledge of best practices, methods, and principles used in strategic planning, infrastructure and facilities planning, and operational research for airports.

  • Proficiency using AutoCAD with aviation software applications such as AviPLAN Airside Pro.

  • Proficiency using Bluebeam Revu and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Knowledge of analytical techniques and related tools including statistical, spreadsheet, database, simulation modelling (CAST or Transoft Solutions Software), and spatial/graphical analysis applications.

  • General knowledge of aviation, airspace and air traffic control, geography, demographics, econometrics, travel and tourism, general / corporate aviation, heliports and aircraft (both fixed- and rotary-wing) characteristics.

  • Experience in airport or airline operations management at a passenger / cargo or general aviation airport.

  • Experience in heliport planning and regulatory compliance

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field that provides a strong foundation for aviation consulting, such as engineering, architecture, planning, or airport management.

  • Five to ten years of increasingly responsible experience in airport planning and design, as well as aviation operations and management fields.

  • Willingness to attend training courses to become proficient in knowledge of airport regulations, computer generated graphics and other courses as required.

  • Work may involve some travel within Canada.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
