The Lead, Risk Management & Compliance is responsible for supporting MHNL's Patient Safety and Patient Experience initiatives. Reporting to the Manager, Risk Management, Privacy & Compliance, this role’s key objectives are to foster a culture of patient-centred care and to strengthen the organization’s focus on patient safety, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance.

The incumbent is responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating patient safety risks; leading incident management and analysis; conducting quality reviews and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA); and supporting patient and family relations from a risk and safety perspective. This role oversees and coordinates service inquiries across the organization, ensuring concerns are managed in a timely, consistent, and transparent manner, with appropriate escalation, investigation, and follow-up. The incumbent remains current with emerging industry trends, legislation, and research related to patient safety, risk management, and compliance.

This position leads the Patient and Family Partnership Council and serves as the organization’s subject-matter expert for patient experience, engagement, and safety-related risk. The incumbent collaborates with operational, clinical, and corporate teams to educate and support front-line staff on patient safety principles, risk management practices, service inquiry management, and patient experience expectations.

Job Requirements

  • Complete business planning and budgeting for division including the review of historical data, determining the activities for year, and forecasting the resources required.
  • Develop and conducting marketing events by identifying relevant market issues, developing target lists, arranging for relevant speakers, and coordinating event logistics.
  • The employee is responsible for monitoring and reporting patient safety occurrences and inquiries, leading investigations as the lead investigator for Issues Management cases, conducting interviews, leading independent reviews, and structured root cause analyses, authoring recommendations and reports, and ensuring their completion and distribution to senior leadership.
  • Work in collaboration with the Safety Division and co-Lead the organization in prospective risk analysis through Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), author reports summarizing risks and recommendations, and coordinate with divisional leaders to ensure completion of recommendations made through FMEA analysis.
  • Act as the MHNL representative for patient and family relations, communicating directly with patients/families for service inquiries and providing follow-up and effective communication of findings.
  • Monitor and review the activities of industry/organizations that produce standards, guidelines and training opportunities specializing in the healthcare system.
  • Support staff awareness of patient safety alerts, industry trends and the overall scope of patient safety for the organization.

 Professional Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Undergraduate degree in a health-related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer may also be considered.
  • Progressive leadership experience in healthcare is required.
  • Experience in committee leadership is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in committee work, education related to safety is a definite asset.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and problem solve with discretion.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Experience in conflict management, meeting facilitation, analysis, problem solving, organizational acuity, tact, diplomacy, interpersonal and time management is required.
  • Computer literacy is required, including, and understanding of Microsoft office applications.
  • Experience with database management and utilization strongly preferred.
