Role
As part of the Systems Engineering Department, the Satellite Systems Engineer will lead or support mission analysis activities including requirements definition, CONOPS development, system design, performance budgeting, performance analysis, implementation, and testing in support of telecommunications satellite programs.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Depending on background and experience, responsibilities may include:
Leading, developing, and maintaining system requirements from mission level down to major subsystem level (mechanical and electrical), including platform, payload, and ground segment, based on mission and customer requirements
Conducting mission design trade-off studies to develop overall mission and subsystem architectures
Developing performance budgets, design documentation, and CONOPS
Supporting mission development and analysis, including link budgets, coverage analysis, geolocation accuracy, pointing knowledge budgets, mass budgets, and related analyses
Developing and maintaining Interface Control Documents (ICDs) between major mission subsystems, such as platform-to-payload interfaces
Reviewing subcontractor design material to ensure compliance with requirements and Statements of Compliance
Performing satellite modeling using a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach
Developing satellite test procedures and overseeing test execution
Leading and supporting verification and validation activities at the mission level
Developing operational procedures for on-orbit commissioning and routine mission operations
Monitoring suppliers and participating in integrated product teams
Participating in satellite electrical and RF performance evaluations
Providing input and support for program reviews including EQSR, SRR, PDR, and CDR
Supporting satellite Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) activities
Attending and supporting test reviews including TRR, TRB, DRB, and NCR processes
Supporting satellite testing activities, including EGSE, test supervision, and data analysis
Supporting testing activities at internal facilities, external test facilities, or supplier sites
Supporting In-Orbit Test (IOT) activities
Writing satellite procedures and operations manuals
Supporting spacecraft operations teams during critical mission phases
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field with 10+ years of relevant experience
Previous design and test experience with LEO and/or MEO satellites and subsystems
Understanding of the space environment and orbital mechanics
Strong knowledge of aerospace systems and engineering fundamentals
Relevant experience with satellite subsystem testing
Demonstrated ability to test RF systems and troubleshoot performance issues
Hands-on systems engineer capable of leading system integration activities
Experience with qualification and acceptance testing of new designs
High attention to detail
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Strong analytical skills with the ability to simplify complex problems
Experience developing or using models and simulation tools
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (to support collaboration with customers and teams outside Quebec)
Experience leading and coaching technical teams
Ability to support spacecraft operations during critical mission phases
