Role Responsibilities

In this position, you will be reporting to Training Sergeant. You will be responsible for the delivery of mandatory training including Peace Officer Recruit Training, In-service training, firearms and control tactics. You will be preparing for each training session, delivering/co-delivering classroom training, providing feedback and evaluation on the performance of the recruits, and collaborating with curriculum developers on changes and improvements to the curriculum and course materials

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to are:

• Delivering classroom training ensuring consistent messaging to maximize learning and application into everyday work performance.
• Creating a delivery plan including presentations by specialists, guest speakers and co-leads.
• Ensuring classroom is properly equipped (training aids, materials for all participants, audio-visual, etc.).
• Reviewing previous feedback and course evaluations to ensure opportunities for improvement are addressed.
• Utilizing different training techniques/aids to engage adult learners (presentations, experiential exercises, guided discussions, practices and simulation exercises, etc.).
• Managing the classroom setting and flow of the training session to ensure learning outcomes are achieved.  
• Providing evaluation and assessment on the performance of recruits to support the incorporation of learning in everyday work performance.
• Leading debriefing sessions regarding course content, instructor’s performance, application of exercises/practice opportunities, and improvements.
• Participate and collaborate with curriculum designers to develop and delivery training that is current, and relevant.  
• Reviewing and analyzing course evaluation to propose changes and modifications.
• Providing advice on design, development, delivery and evaluation of training programs from interaction with recruits, and supervisors.
• Utilizing expertise in the program area to suggest alternative training tools and to build a pool of situational training exercised.
  
  Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
• Community Peace Officer, Sheriff and Corrections related legislation and regulations.
• Organizations, municipalities and companies employing peace officers including GoA ministries.
• Correctional Services program delivery policies, and practices.
• Issues and challenges impacting the correctional services and peace officers in Alberta.
• Adult learning theories with experience through the delivery of training and/or adult training/learning initiatives.
• Ability to quickly establish rapport with course participants to engage, encourage and support learning.
• Ability to analyze and evaluate recruit performance relative to course outcomes. 
• Ability to synthesize course evaluations to influence changes and to adjust instruction style.

Qualifications

Required:

• University graduation in a related field, such a Criminal Justice/Criminology, Policing/Law Enforcement, Social Sciences, Adult Education, Business, etc.; no experience required.
• Completion of a law enforcement induction training program from a recognized institution or agency (Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services Training Academy, Ontario Police College, Edmonton Police Service, etc.) is required.
• Valid Alberta class 5 Driver’s License is required.
  
  Assets & preferences:
• Experience delivering training in a law enforcement training environment.
• Current Training Academy or related instructor qualifications (Essential Facilitations, Control Tactics, Firearms, EVOC, First Aid, etc.).
• Working experience in leadership roles/initiatives (Peer Support Program, Field Training Officer, etc.).
• Working Experience in formal training, education and experience instructing using adult learning principles.
• Demonstrated experience in contributing to workplace culture through special projects and initiatives.
• Experience working as a Canadian law enforcement officer.
  
  Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Notes

• This position averages 40 hours per week.
  
  
• Hours of work: 7:45AM - 4:45PM, Monday to Friday.
  
  
• These are 2 temporary positions located at Alberta Training Academy, 1568-Hector Road NW, Edmonton.
  
  
• Occasional evening and weekend hours work is required, as well as travel within the province.
