Water is critical to Albertans and their way of life. A current mandate of the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas is to review Alberta’s water management strategy to increase the availability of water and water licences to Alberta municipalities, businesses and agricultural producers while maintaining the highest standards of water conservation and treatment.
The Water Availability and Partnerships branch is responsible for ensuring water sustainability through the development of strategies, policies, regulations and standards to ensure sound and effective management of surface water,groundwater and wetlands in Alberta through the Water Act and associated policies. This team holds a key leadership role in supporting the Minister’s mandate with respect to improving water management in the province.

The Priority Issues Coordinator (PIC) plays a key role in providing accurate, timely, and strategic information to ensure informed decision-making within the branch.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the PIC will collaborate closely with branch leadership and the Assistant Deputy Minister's Office (ADMO) to manage critical and emerging issues from both an issues management and policy perspective.
The PIC serves as the primary liaison for the branch, ensuring situational awareness, effective communication, and coordination with both internal and external stakeholders. This role involves tracking issues, supporting operational planning, and contributing to strategic initiatives while maintaining strong relationships across various teams.
