Bookkeeper – Ottawa, ON (Onsite)
We are helping our construction client in the search for a Bookkeeper. The Bookkeeper will oversee financial and administrative aspects of construction projects, including accounts payable/receivable, job costing, payroll, and financial reporting. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with solid bookkeeping experience in construction who is looking for long-term growth, with potential to advance. This is a full time permanent position. This role is fully onsite (Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm) based in Ottawa, ON.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Manage full-cycle accounts payable and receivable, including progress billing, holdbacks, and vendor/subcontractor payments.
- Prepare and process client invoicing, collections, and intercompany reconciliations.
- Track project costs (labour, materials, equipment), monitor budgets, and report on profitability.
- Process payroll and union remittances, ensuring accuracy and compliance with tax filings.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and reports (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow).
- Reconcile credit card statements and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare and remit HST, sales tax, and other government filings on time.
- Maintain accurate and organized records for audits and compliance purposes.
- Support the CFO and accounting team with daily financial operations.
- Perform general administrative tasks as needed to support office operations.
Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum 3 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, with direct exposure to construction project accounting.
- Strong understanding of progress billing, holdbacks, and construction contracts is essential.
- Proficiency with accounting software (Jonas preferred; Sage or QuickBooks Desktop/Online also considered an asset).
- Intercompany accounting experience is strongly preferred.
- Previous experience in a construction or industrial environment is an asset.
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel and the full MS Office Suite.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities to manage multiple projects.
- Effective communicator, comfortable working with project managers, clients, and vendors.
- Willingness to ask questions, collaborate, and contribute to process improvements.
Education
- Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business (or equivalent experience).
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with Jonas Construction software.
- Exposure to surface-level financial analysis.
