As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for fostering Alberta’s environmentally responsible forest management practices, including management of wildfires.  We preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manages public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

Role Responsibilities

Alberta Forestry and Parks is seeking a dedicated Forest Officer to join our Wildfire Management team. This is your opportunity to play a vital role in protecting our forests, supporting community safety, and contributing to sustainable forest management. As a Forest Officer, you will be at the forefront of wildfire and forest management operations. This dynamic role involves delivering key programs in wildfire prevention, detection, suppression, and forest health. You will supervise seasonal staff, collaborate with stakeholders, and respond to wildfire incidents across the province. Your work will directly support the department’s mission to maintain healthy forests and safe communities.

 

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering wildfire management operations and supporting seasonal staff and contractors.
  • Ensuring safe, productive, and effective wildfire operations across the Forest Area.
  • Responding to wildfire incidents and participating in Forest Area rosters as needed.
  • Participating in wildfire prevention initiatives and public education efforts.
  • Supporting forest management and forest health programs, including monitoring activities.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely records in alignment with provincial policies and procedures.

Qualifications

The minimum requirements for the Forest Officer role are a two-year diploma in Forestry or a related Natural Resource Management field plus three (3) years of directly related forestry or wildfire experience.

 

Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.
 

Assets:

  • Supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Eligibility for registration with the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience with wildfire or forest management operations.
  • Familiarity with Alberta’s Forest Operating Monitoring Program (FOMP) and Silviculture/ARIS Monitoring Program (SAM).

Notes

This is a temporary, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday. The incumbent may be requested to work overtime, evening and weekends due to the emergency nature of wildfires.

 

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders. 

 

Candidates may be asked to complete a written assignment as a part of the interview process.
