The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is responsible for the policies, legislation, regulations,
programs and services that enable Alberta’s agriculture and food sectors to flourish and contribute to Alberta’s economic recovery and growth. The Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bioproduct manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.

The Export and Investment Branch focuses on attracting investment to Alberta’s agri-processing sectors and expanding export opportunities for Alberta’s businesses. The team also designs and delivers Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership funding and the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit.

The Investment team works closely with our seven agriculture-dedicated staff in the Alberta International Offices in Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Mexico City, Minneapolis and Düsseldorf. Together the team takes a collaborative approach to increasing investment in Alberta.

Role Responsibilities

Alberta's government sees agriculture as a key economic driver for growth in Alberta. To successfully grow the agri-processing industry in Alberta, it is necessary to create and promote Alberta as a stable, creditable and profitable location for value-added agriculture investors. Attracting investment is a competitive business. Alberta is competing with other Canadian provinces, U.S. states and other countries to attract investment into the agri-processing sector.

Reporting to the Investment Attraction and Evaluation Director, the Investment Attraction Manager leads a client-focused approach to increase investment in Alberta's value-added agriculture sector.

The ideal candidate is organized, can handle many complex projects at once and is unfazed by the need to meet changing and tight deadlines. They demonstrate exceptional leadership, diplomatic acumen and flexibility, communicate clearly and effectively both in writing and orally and build strong networks. They take initiative, seek innovative solutions, pay close attention to detail and excel at problem-solving.

The Investment Attraction manager will be responsible to:

1. Build and lead a high-performing team

  • Streamline administrative policies to reduce internal bureaucracy.
  • Cultivate a diverse and inclusive workplace that values different perspectives.
  • Provide constructive feedback and growth opportunities to staff.
  • Manage budgets and uphold government policies and procedures.
  • Actively contribute to branch leadership discussions and planning.


2. Provide consistent, high-quality service to investors

  • Manage services for value-added agriculture investors including:
    • information on the advantages of doing business in Alberta,
    • coordination of incoming and outgoing missions,
    • site selection support,
    • permitting support,  
    • support on incorporating in Alberta, 
    • access to talent,  
    • immigration support, 
    • pathfinding for regulatory compliance solutions, 
    • access to utilities and transportation corridors and   
    • access to grants and research and development support.
  • Ensure staff have access to necessary tools, resources and information.
  • Track and report progress towards outcomes, highlighting potential issues.
  • Continually enhance client services and introduce new programs and policies.
  • Foster strong relationships within Alberta's investment attraction ecosystem.


3. Promote Alberta as an ideal location for agri-processing investment

  • Lead a team that identifies and pursues potential investors, both domestically and internationally, that are a strategic fit for Alberta.
  • Identify opportunities to showcase Alberta to potential investors.
  • Collaborate with other investment attraction organizations to amplify messages.

Qualifications

The minimum requirement is a University Degree in related field, preferably in business administration, international relations, commerce, marketing or economics and a minimum of four (4) years of progressively related work experience is required; or a related two-year diploma with six (6) years of progressively related experience.

Equivalency: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Preference will be given to those with:

  • Experience leading a team in a client driven operating environment.
  • Experience as a proven people leader, having led teams to achieve goals, cultivate morale and inspire high performers to excel.
  • A strong understanding from your relevant work experience of investment attraction.
  • A proven track record to synthesize facts and use slides and briefing notes to engage both internal colleagues and external stakeholders.


Assets:

  • You build productive working relationships with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders, leveraging your communication, consultation and negotiating skills.
  • You have a demonstrated ability to be a critical thinker by considering multiple perspectives and come to concise decisions that may not always please all parties.
  • You have strong project management skills that reflect your ability to prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail, while achieving deadlines. 
  • You naturally document and track progress of your team’s performance and implement continuous improvement processes.

Notes

  • Office located in Edmonton, J.G.O’Donoghue Building (7000-113 Street).
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time).
  • Monday to Friday (08:15 am-16:30 pm).
  • Managers are expected to work the hours needed to fulfill their responsibilities (evening and weekend work is sometimes required).
  • Travel: valid Driver’s License is required for travel within Alberta.
