This position is located in
Iqaluit, NU and reports to the Deputy Chief Safety Officer. The Safety Officer provides
services to employers, workers, and the public and is appointed under the
legislation as a Safety Officer. In compliance with the Northwest Territories
(NT) and Nunavut (NU) Safety Acts, Explosives Use Act, and the associated
Regulations (Acts & Regs), and fosters the vision, mission and values of
the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission.
The Acts and Regulations
give the Officer the legislative authority to enter worksites to assess
compliance with the Acts & Regs, to conduct inspections and investigate
dangerous occurrences, serious injuries or fatalities, work refusals and
employee claims of discrimination.

Criminal Record Check: Candidates must be able to

Equivalencies: May be considered based on
a one-year of directly related experience equivalent to one year of education
or one year of education for one year of experience. However, combinations of
education and experience must often be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) is a government agency responsible for administering the Workers' Compensation Acts, Safety Acts, Explosives Use Acts and the Mine Health and Safety Acts.
Together, with their partners, the WSCC provides services to almost 40,000 workers and 4,000 employers across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, processes over 3,000 claims annually, and conducts over 1,000 inspections annually to ensure the safety of northern workplaces. The WSCC is unique in Canada as it is the only workers' compensation organization in the country to insure workers across more than one province or territory.
