Our federal Government client is seeking a licensed and experienced Optometrist to provide essential eye care services within a correctional health setting across multiple institutions in Quebec. The role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams and upholding the highest standards of optometric care in a secure environment.

Tasks

  • Perform comprehensive eye examinations, assess visual acuity, and diagnose ocular diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

  • Conduct vision testing including refractive error measurements, perimetry testing, and verification of prescription lenses.

  • Provide treatments for eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and uveitis, including prescription of medications.

  • Prescribe corrective lenses aligned with Essential Health Services Framework, and validate eyewear fit upon receipt.

  • Fit and adjust eyeglass frames and perform minor on-site repairs including hinge adjustments and nose pad replacements.

  • Refer patients to ophthalmologists, medical practitioners, or other relevant specialists as needed.

  • Offer preventative care advice to support inmate eye health and reduce risk of visual impairments.

  • Document all services, diagnoses, treatments, and referrals in the Electronic Health Care Record in compliance with standards.

  • Advise on supply and equipment needs, and assist in the documentation for inmate-requested special authorization items.

  • Participate in internal investigations or grievance reviews, including documentation review and possible interviews.

  • Provide services at various institutions as required, including temporary coverage and participation in quality assurance initiatives.

  • Attend meetings and contribute to policy reviews and reporting initiatives led by the Project Authority.

  • Maintain communication on any limitations to service delivery, including complaints or professional restrictions.

  • Ensure continuity of care by coordinating backup resources during periods of absence.

Qualifications

  • Current and valid license in good standing from the provincial optometry licensing body in Quebec.

  • Minimum six months of optometry practice experience within the past two years.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

  • Ability to document accurately and thoroughly in electronic medical records.

  • Bilingual (French and English), able to conduct assessments in the patient’s language of choice.

  • Must possess (or be eligible for) Reliability security clearance.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with sensitivity to cultural, religious, and gender diversity.
