Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, Contaminated Sites and Remediation, the Contaminated Site Manager oversees a team of multi-disciplinary professionals supporting the delivery of a province-wide Contaminated Sites and Remediation program.

Some responsibilities of this role include:

  • Leading the implementation of operational standards and exercises delegated statutory decision-making under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), to provide regulatory oversight of the long-term management of unauthorized releases in soil and groundwater (i.e., contaminated sites) and support regulatory and compliance programs.
  • Overseeing a team managing contaminated sites, ensuring timely review of submissions, innovative problem-solving for remediation, database tracking, and outcomes-based decision-making to support environmental and health protection.
  • Providing expert support to Approvals and Compliance programs on soil and groundwater contamination issues, coordinates workload and priorities with division managers.
  • Collaborate with the Contaminated Sites Program Director and Managers to set priorities, manage capacity, and proactively address workload challenges through regular communication with related programs.
  • Leading education and outreach efforts with proponents, municipalities, and policy partners by providing technical guidance, program standards, and leveraging technology to promote environmental excellence in contaminated site management.
  • Implementing EPA’s plans on the ground in alignment with the Regulatory Assurance Framework, while driving outcome-based approaches.
  • Providing input and expert knowledge to support process improvements to support IT system integration.
  • Proactively contribute operational perspectives to inform policy updates and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University graduation in a related field such as resource management, environmental sciences, environmental/natural resource law.
  • Six (6) years progressively responsible experience in an environmental regulatory setting.
  • Advanced leadership, communication, problem solving, and decision-making skills.


Equivalency:
Related experience or completed education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of Alberta Environment and Protected Areas’ strategic goals, regulatory frameworks, and regional planning initiatives.
  • Expert knowledge of environmental legislation, including the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Remediation Regulation, and related acts (e.g., Water Act, Public Lands Act).
  • Skilled in environmental and human health risk management, cumulative effects, and regulatory compliance across the project lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and manage multidisciplinary teams of professionals in technical and regulatory environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic and operational planning, process improvement, and accountability frameworks.
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and project management skills to balance multiple complex files and competing priorities.
  • Effective communicator with excellent facilitation, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experienced in stakeholder engagement and relationship-building across government, industry, and the public.
  • Sound understanding of legal principles and the ability to assess the political, operational, and environmental implications of decisions.
  • Adaptable and proactive leader with experience managing change, emerging issues, and organizational risk.

Notes

This is a permanent position, working Monday – Friday, 36.25 hours per week.

This position can be based Calgary, Red Deer, or Edmonton.
