Contributes to the overall success of the Employee Relations Department in Canada, domestically ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. 

 

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:  

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and provides strategic guidance, direction, and coaching to business line leaders and HR Business Partners on a broad range of high-risk ER matters serving as a key escalation point to mitigate risk involving potential violations of the Global Harassment policy/Code of Conduct. Required to propose solutions through clear and concise communication considering client needs and key issues, assessing risks and providing options while ensuring fairness and consistency in process, policy and practice. 
  • Leads highly sensitive investigations while working independently on  complex employee matters, often engaging in contentious dialogue to analyze the facts of situations
  • Leads a team of highly functioning and skilled ER Managers, to efficiently and effectively support the assigned business lines, HR Business Partners or HR Heads in dealing with low, medium or high risk contentious employee and/or labour relations issues:
    • Ensure the ER Managers have the necessary tools – technical devices, appropriate training, coaching and guidance on all ER issues and processes;
    • Assists in cases where appropriate; providing guidance, direction, discussing alternatives/options, legal risks and outcomes, and recommendations; overseeing the management of
    • HR Reviews, Harassment, Human Rights or Irregular Practice Investigations;
    • Develop the teams’ ability to probe, persuade, interview and investigate thoroughly; then communicate findings in a manner that supports a solid and well thought out recommendation;
    • Support the ER Managers in stakeholders’ discussions to ensure risks to the Bank are mitigated; participate in large initiatives with the ER Manager to ensure consistency and understanding of what the ER involvement will be.
  • Lead and Develop an expert Employee Relations team:
    • Ensure one-on-one coaching sessions are held; identify any performance gaps; provide training and support on challenging and complex cases, or identify training opportunities to assist with identified performance gaps; provide ongoing, objective and balanced feedback to ER Managers; and manage performance, if required;
    • Monitor workloads; manage absences & workflows across the team; create and maintain a positive work environment through recognition and reward for engaged ER Managers;
    • Lead/participate in the interview process for hiring of ER Managers; manage the Annual Performance and Development Plans process for the team;
    • Encourage participation in all ER huddles, meetings or initiatives that arise; leading by example in this accountability.
  • Manage and monitor processes; increasing departmental effectiveness: 
    • Ensure established ER processes and protocols are documented, followed and monitored for effectiveness and ongoing usage;
    • Cases are managed in a timely manner meeting all case requirements
    • Challenge ER norms; generate ideas and escalate/implement  as appropriate;
    • Assist Director in identifying, recommending andimplementing resolutions to identified systemic issues affecting ER and possibly the HR Function;
    • Lead/participate in projects or collaborate with other areas to effect organizational change within ER;
    • Meeting deadlines for reporting; participating in the planning, organizing and delivery of ER meetings and learnings across the team  
  • Identify efficiencies and maintain or reduce cost/volume ratios: 
    • Manage and monitor expenses and identify efficiencies and opportunities
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions. 
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct. 
  • Champions a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team. 

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Expert communication skills (verbal and written) 
  • Communicate effectively and persuasively with management or Country Head, Human Resources, the ER / WAHS team and the Legal Group and the external legal or labour counsel;
  • Strong knowledge of legislation and/or Collective Bargaining Agreement details, as appropriate by line of business, regions or countries that you support;
  • Expert interviewing, negotiation & mediating skills, and use of conflict resolution techniques;
  • Strong understanding of local human resources policies and procedures in the country(ies) you Support;
  • Strong time management and priority setting skills to meet the needs of a large group of clients;
  • Solid Relationship Building Skills, to understand the business strategies;
  • Solid knowledge of computer systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • A recognized post-secondary qualification in Human Resources or considerable extent of banking experience (with extensive experience in supervision) or experience in Employee Relations or Human Resources at the managerial level within the Bank: minimum experience of 5 years.
