Here’s the scoop - Summary

The Governance & Controls Specialist (G&C Specialist) plays a critical role to enable Champion Petfoods’ system of internal controls over financial reporting. By partnering with local, regional, and global stakeholders, this role supports design, implementation, improvement, and oversight of effective and efficient governance and internal controls.

The G&C Specialist draws on extensive experience, knowledge of leading practices, and organizational requirements to act as a trusted partner, providing governance and control advice to various stakeholders, on various topics, in a rapidly changing environment.

By supporting high-quality business processes, the G&C Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring control compliance and operational excellence, directly supporting Champion Petfoods’ purpose to earn pet lover trust everyday so pets thrive for a lifetime.

What a typical day looks like

  • Work with Control Owners and various other stakeholders to design, support implementation, document, and validate solutions to mitigate control deficiencies.
  • Support the monitoring, measurement, reporting, and improvement of governance & control KPIs.
  • Perform a key role in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Segregation of Duties assessments and mitigation actions.
  • Performs annual self-testing in alignment with testing plans to provide assurances over the effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Supports the development and roll-out of governance related training and tools.
  • Supports the coordination of activities to drive alignment between Champion and internal / external audit teams.
  • Champions the enforcement of policy, procedure, and compliance expectations, escalating matters as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates business acumen and leadership to the broader organization through curiosity, challenging the status quo in the spirit of continuous improvement while holding oneself to a high standard of professionalism and fostering a high performance, collaborative, environment.
  • Ensures strict confidentiality and privacy of the Company’s financial and business records.
     

In the future, this role may also be tasked with planning, implementing, and managing master data governance and development of the master data management program.

What you'll bring

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience directly related to audit, internal controls, and / or corporate governance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in commerce or a related field is required.
  • Internal Auditor certification is required.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates holding certifications in internal controls, information systems auditing, and / or risk management.
  • CDMP designation preferred, but not necessary.
  • Experience with planning and coordination of diverse stakeholders must be demonstrated.
  • Strong policy, process, and control-orientation and experience with the ability to develop and drive conformance with standards.
  • Experience with documenting, evaluating, and testing controls.
  • Experience with identifying, tracking, and resolving control gaps.
  • Demonstrated experience of partnering with business stakeholders to overcome challenges by creating solutions and /or improving processes.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Excellent communication skills are required, both verbal and written, and the ability to communicate well with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work through complexity and ambiguity.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

  • Self-directed with high capacity and dedication to follow-through and complete overlapping projects.
  • Demonstrated integrity and professionalism with ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to respect and maintain matters of a confidential nature

Working Conditions

  • The majority if work will be in an office environment, but the project requirements may include working in non-standard workplaces.
  • Expectations are to work a standard work week but may be required to work some early mornings or evenings to align working time zones with our regional teams.
  • Occasional travel maybe required.
  • This position has a hybrid work schedule with a combination of work from home and from our Edmonton corporate office.
