The Opportunity

Office location: Boston - USA or Toronto - Canada

Work arrangement: Hybrid (3 days in office, 2 days from home); Remote work arrangement is not available

The John Hancock Technology Office is seeking an experienced software engineer/architect to engage with multiple high-profile initiatives. This position requires the ability to architect and design highly scalable solutions that leverage both our existing capabilities and emerging technologies, supporting our digital, customer-centric transformation. As a Solution Architect, you will translate business vision into technological reality, working as a senior technical team member to provide oversight and expertise across various technologies and business domains, delivering comprehensive solutions.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in insurance business functions and solution architecture within the insurance domain. The ideal candidate will have experience facilitating integration efforts across internal systems and with external third-party partners, supporting business collaboration and enhancing ecosystem connectivity.

This is a wonderful opportunity for a senior engineer to apply their deep technical expertise while focusing on high-level solution architecture, integration strategy and collaboration with business and delivery teams.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the engineering leads and developers for the related business functions to own and drive end-to-end delivery of technical solutions to the business.

  • Produce key design documents and incremental technical solution architecture artifacts based on project needs and our architectural target state.

  • Actively participate in all aspects of project life cycle, working closely with solution delivery teams and committed to business success.

  • Design and implement innovative technology proof-of-concepts.

  • Facilitate collaboration across business and technical teams, particularly in insurance specific contexts and in coordination with external business partners.

  • Whiteboard and present solution options, outlining pros and cons to drive informed decision-making.

  • Incorporate feedback from various stakeholders to drive design decisions.

  • Review artifacts like use cases, estimates, high level designs, low level designs, code, and provide appropriate feedback.

  • Review packaged solutions for technical fit and feasibility for integration.

  • Guide development teams and drive solutions through various review processes by leading and contributing to artifacts such as design diagrams, decision trees, pattern articulation, etc. at respective review boards (segment and global).

  • Identify complex issues in a timely manner and provide mitigation recommendations to the Project and Product leads.

  • Support integration strategies that enable business collaboration and connectivity across internal and external systems.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in a complex environment in driving operational excellence and best practices.

  • Contribute to architecture and engineering communities across the company.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience

  • Overall information technology experience, including application or system development - 7+ years

  • Experience in the insurance industry with solutioning and integration efforts is strongly preferred.

  • Hands-on experience with multiple programming languages, and database systems.

  • Current with innovative technologies, language frameworks, design patterns, including recent experience with at least one programming language.

  • Required hands-on experience with both back-end and front-end development and design in any or all - Java, .Net, React, Angular, Azure (preferred) or AWS, Web, Mobile, AI,

  • Knowledge of Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and exposure to Infrastructure as a Code.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, facilitation, and negotiation.

  • Excellent time management skills, including multi-tasking and prioritization.

  • Strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to estimate the financial impact of various solution architecture alternatives.

  • Must be comfortable working in an open, highly collaborative team environment.

  • Experience with software development life cycles and technical design principles. (e.g., Agile, Scrum, Disciplined Agile, TOGAF, etc.), certification is a plus.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines with attention to detail.

  • Exposure to application rationalization and modernization initiatives.

  • Hands-on experience with containerized and serverless workloads.

  • Understanding and exposure to security and compliance standards and best practices.
