Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Policy, as the Policy Development Advisor, you will be responsible for contributing to multiple policy initiatives that will impact the long-term and future direction of public safety and the administration of justice in Alberta. The Policy Development Advisor stays informed of issues and trends and provides necessary information as required. This position requires coordination skills and the ability to lead small projects or components of larger projects to aid in evaluating, assessing and changing policies, programs and objectives or for reports. 

 

Other responsibilities of this position include:

  • Identifying emerging policy issues to effectively analyze diverse viewpoints and develop valid recommendations for presentation to ministry representatives.
  • Assisting and providing input into Cabinet decision-making documents, for recommendation for senior officials and executive team.
  • Determining the best approach to research problems, applying knowledge of ethical considerations, and collecting relevant data for research projects.
  • Researching, evaluating, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources, including internal and cross-jurisdictional scanning.
  • Provides input, recommendations, and advice around policy development process.
  • Provides a source of legislative and Departmental program information and policy interpretation for stakeholders.
  • Supports implementing integrated processes for the Ministry when there is a policy change.
  • Facilitates meetings with stakeholders to discuss gaps.
  • Develops options and reports on the development of programs and initiatives.
  • Develops information networks and research programming practices from jurisdictional scanning in order to identify best practices.
  • Reviews policy proposals from stakeholders for programming plan quality and compliance.

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • University graduation in humanities, social sciences, law or public administration.
  • Plus 2 years of related experience

 

Equivalencies considered based on one-year experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

 

Assets:

  • Experience interpreting and writing policy documents.
  • Experience with project coordination and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience writing for a variety of audiences.
  • Advanced understanding of the political and organizational environments and decision-making processes of government.
  • Project Management background or designation
