The business focus of Group Underwriting is to establish, administer and manage customer focused financial solutions for new and existing group benefit programs that are in line with the company's growth and margin targets. The Group Underwriting Atlantic team are primarily responsible the overall execution of the brokerage and corporate business for the Atlantic market.

The Business Lead, Group Underwriting Atlantic supports the overall workload, the day to day in-force activities of the various levels of Group Underwriters and will report directly to the Manager, Group Underwriting Atlantic. The Business Lead will also support any projects or initiatives to generate the efficiency of Underwriting team.  The Business Lead will collaborate extensively with sales, services, actuarial and other operational areas within Medavie Blue Cross to achieve its financial targets on the group health, life, and disability income lines of business.

The Business Lead brings knowledge and expertise in group underwriting and leadership to the department. This position will be of interest to individuals who truly believe in going above and beyond in coaching the underwriters, while effectively promoting and supporting a positive work environment and an engaged cohesive team.

This role is best suited for someone who brings a solid group underwriting expertise, has demonstrated superior coaching and mentoring ability, can take leadership in projects and initiatives; and ability to get buy-in from peers and stakeholders. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishment of renewal pricing which includes analysis of experience/trend to justify the reasons behind the renewal and to recommend pricing alternates.  This also encompasses responding to client inquiries relating to pricing and experience, Maintaining a reduced client portfolio (50%).

  • Contribute to the establishment of rates for new group business and respond to financial questions within the specifications at times when workload of the team is requiring support.

  • Focus on overall execution of In-force segment for Atlantic and making sound decisions to ensure our growth, persistency and profitability objective is met.

  • Perform quality evaluations and proactively train, coach and mentor underwriters on various funding arrangements and business negotiation.

  • Provide support and feedback to the teams on the skills and requirements required to achieve success in their roles.

  • Collaborate to performance evaluations and contribute to the development of action plans for professional development.

  • Oversee workload management for the team.

  • Required to participate in working groups on various projects.

  • Assisting the Manager, Group Underwriting with various tasks and projects

Qualifications

Education: Completion of post-secondary education in related field or equivalent work experience; GBA designation under CEBS program is strongly preferred.

Work Experience: At least five (5) years of relevant work experience; a portion being in a leadership role is considered an asset.

Computer Skills: Strong computer skills and experience working with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to apply group insurance underwriting principles and to provide technical underwriting solutions for clients.

  • Self-directed with high levels of personal accountability and responsibility.

  • Excellent reasoning, judgment, and decision-making abilities.

  • Process strong analytical skills with high attention to detail.

  • Time-management skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment involving multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Previous experience working in a leadership capacity, preferably in an insurance environment.

  • Leverage skills and abilities to build a cohesive team to ensure consistency execution. Follows through on commitments and establishes regular and comprehensive exchange of ideas constantly with passion and commitment.

Language Skills: Bilingualism (French and English) is considered an asset but not required.
