Role Responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic leader to drive privacy practices and ensure compliance with privacy legislation across the GoA. If you excel at strategic thinking, problem-solving, and guiding teams through complex privacy matters, this role is for you! As the Manager, Privacy Services, you will play a crucial role in shaping privacy practices, leading a team dedicated to ensuring compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act.

Reporting to the Director, Privacy Policy and Services, the Manager, Privacy Services, is responsible for leading a team of professionals in delivering privacy services to GoA departments, agencies, boards, and commissions. This role requires a strategic leader to oversee privacy compliance, risk management, and breach response while promoting best practices. You will collaborate with senior leadership to develop proactive privacy solutions and best practices.

Your key responsibilities include:

• Leading a team of professional and administrative staff in delivering privacy services that ensure compliance with the FOIP Act.
• Planning and managing resources to effectively meet operational priorities and service demands.
• Providing strategic recommendations and analysis to senior leadership on privacy-related requests.
• Conducting assessments and advising on the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information under FOIP.
• Guiding public bodies on incident response, privacy complaints, investigations, and impact assessments.
• Supporting the public body in responding to reviews, inquiries, and investigations by the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
• Delivering training and awareness programs to ensure staff understand their responsibilities under the FOIP Act.
• Managing sensitive and potentially controversial privacy requests while ensuring compliance with legislative requirements.
• Coaching and developing staff, fostering a culture of respect, trust, and continuous learning.
• Overseeing administrative functions such as resource allocation, team performance, and issue resolution.

Qualifications

Required:

• A related university degree (e.g., Public Administration, Political Science, Law, Arts), supplemented by at least four (4) years of related experience. Equivalencies may be considered. 
• Knowledge of the FOIP Act/Regulation, publication and guidelines and experience interpreting legislation.
• Extensive experience in privacy management, compliance, and risk assessment.
• Proven experience leading a team and managing staff.

Assets:

• Information Access and Protection of Privacy (IAPP) Certificate
• Strong political acumen
• Experience with complex files
• Familiarity with government and ministerial processes.

Equivalencies are:
A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience; or a minimum of eight (8) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.

Notes

Additional Position Details:

• This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm). 
• While this position is eligible for remote work, the successful candidate must reside in Alberta to work remotely.
