Software Development Manager, Elastic Container Service

Amazon Web Services

Vancouver, British Columbia

Job description

Amazon ECS is a fully managed container orchestration service. Customers run mission-critical workloads on it, from startups to the largest enterprises, across EC2, Fargate, and ECS Managed Instances. We're hiring an SDM to lead a team of software engineers who build and operate a core part of ECS. You will own a large-scale distributed system and set the technical direction for it. You will also grow the engineers on your team and keep the service highly available, secure, and fast to improve.

You will work with Principal Engineers, product management, and peer teams across Containers, EC2, networking, and security. You will own the roadmap for your area, from customer problem to launch to operations.

Key job responsibilities
Lead, hire, and develop a team of 6–12 software engineers. Set a high bar, give clear feedback, and build an inclusive team that delivers.

Own the design, delivery, and operation of ECS control plane or data plane components. This includes scheduling, orchestration, agent and runtime, service discovery and networking integration, or deployments, depending on team charter.

Drive operational excellence. Own availability, latency, and security targets and the on-call health of the team. Lead COE reviews and make sure the fixes ship.

Work backwards from customers. Write and review PRFAQs and design docs, prioritize with product management, and deliver on commitments.
Plan and manage delivery across multiple quarters. Balance new features, tech debt, scale, and operational work.

Raise engineering standards: testing, deployment safety, observability, and use of AI-assisted development to speed up the team.
Collaborate with dependent teams and service owners. Resolve cross-team technical and prioritization conflicts.

Engage directly with customers and field teams to understand needs and escalations.
Basic Qualifications:

- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Experience in Linux and Networking protocols, or experience in Kubernetes, Docker or containers ecosystem and experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities
- 3+ years of virtualization, orchestration and cloud computing (eg. Hypervisors, VMware, Xen) experience, or Bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field
