SDM, AWS Builder Acceleration Service Care Center

Amazon Web Services

Vancouver, British Columbia

Job description

Are you passionate about leveraging GenAI and advanced AWS technologies to simplify builder experience and accelerate innovations at AWS scale? Amazon Web Services' Service Care Center (SCC) is building a new team in Vancouver, and we're looking for a Software Development Manager to lead it. SCC consolidates and automates the operational burden of AWS's 60+ maintenance-mode services, returning builder capacity to innovation. This team owns its efficiency mission. You will lead a group of engineers (Sr. SDE, SDEIIs, SDEIs, and SysDEs) who both operate AWS's most fleet- and compute-heavy maintenance-mode services and build the portfolio-scale automation that detects over-provisioning and tracks footprint reductions across the entire SCC portfolio. Your charter is measurable and ambitious: drive down infrastructure spend, reclaim SDE capacity, and eliminate instances and hosts at scale building each win once and applying it everywhere so operating the Nth service costs a fraction of the first. This is a rare chance to build a brand-new team from the ground up, develop engineers from lever-execution into platform ownership, and make a direct, quantifiable impact on how efficiently AWS runs, all while advancing SCC's NoOps vision of services that run at near-zero builder attention.
We are seeking an experienced software development manager to help us build and lead SCC org in Vancouver to simplify and accelerate the software development experience for 20,000+ AWS engineers. You will shape AWS builder experience from the ground up with a singular mission: make software development, deployment and maintenance simpler across AWS. Success requires building services and tools that reduce friction, listening closely to what your internal customers tell you gets in the way of building, influencing the Amazon Software Builder Experience (ASBX) roadmap, and driving transformation for engineering teams. You will harness advanced technologies, including AI-powered tooling, agentic workflows, and innovative AWS solutions, to create next-generation software builder experience at AWS scale.

This role requires ownership, autonomy, and an ability to deliver results. You should be a self-starter with a bias towards independent problem solving. Clear communication and prioritization will be important as you partner with stakeholders to plan, design, and deliver game changing builder experiences to accelerate innovation. Your passion for improving builder experiences, and proven experience managing complex technology projects, will help you make strong strategic judgments. Roll up your sleeves, build an engineering team second to none, and have fun while creating tons of value to AWS builders!

Key job responsibilities
- Build and lead a new organization dedicated to improving AWS developer experience
- Identify and prioritize high-impact problems that impede AWS software development
- Develop a strategic roadmap that delivers meaningful improvements weekly while working toward long-term transformation
- Establish team culture and set new standards for the ideal software builder experience
- Partner closely with ASBX while focusing on AWS specific challenges
- Make and defend decisions about scope and priorities, even when facing pressure from senior stakeholders

Unique Opportunities
- Re-imagine how developers build and operate the software that underpins the world's largest cloud
- Shape a new organization from day one
- Drive significant transformation across AWS engineering
- Pioneer the use of cutting-edge generative AI technologies to create the next generation of builder experiences

A day in the life
You should have deep expertise in the architecture and business use of AWS technologies. You recognize the transformative potential of generative AI in software development and are excited to pioneer AI-powered builder experiences that fundamentally change how developers write, debug, deploy and operate code at scale. You remain technically hands-on and close to the technology despite your leadership role. You're passionate about developer experience and get frustrated by inefficiencies that make building software unnecessarily difficult. You understand the challenges AWS developers face today and have a clear vision for improvement. You spend time listening to teams across AWS and validating that your teams are working on the right problems, and the solutions meaningfully simplify the AWS developer experience across all teams. You're comfortable maintaining focused scope and saying "no" to distractions, even when they come from senior stakeholders. You recognize that exceptional execution within a focused mission creates more impact than diluting efforts across too many initiatives. You're an experienced hiring manager excited about building a world-class, diverse organization. You take the long view while delivering incremental improvements. You're deeply self-critical, actively seek customer feedback, and are willing to challenge the status quo. You have strong backbone - able to voice opinions confidently, make difficult decisions, and defend your position when working with leaders across AWS.
Basic Qualifications:
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
