The Ministry of Indigenous Relations works with Indigenous communities, the federal government, industry and other stakeholders to support strong, vibrant Indigenous communities and people who fully participate in a prosperous, competitive and diverse Alberta. The ministry is also responsible for: 
 

  • Promoting social and economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples.
  • Co-leading Indigenous training for all Alberta public servants.
  • Working with other ministries to develop opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to influence land and resource management decisions.


The Strategic Engagement and Policy Innovation (SEPI) branch is part of the Consultation, Land and Policy (CLP) division in Indigenous Relations. SEPI provides a strong foundation of policy development, strategic engagement, consultation capacity development, expert advice and relationship-building through education, training, and capacity funding. Within SEPI, the Métis Credible Assertion team is responsible for implementing the Government of Alberta’s Métis Credible Assertion Process, which allows Métis organizations (other than Metis Settlements) to be considered for consultation on land and natural resources decisions if they can successfully demonstrate a credible assertion of Métis Aboriginal rights.

Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about Indigenous rights and skilled in research and analysis? As the Advisor, Métis Credible Assertion, you will have an opportunity to lead historical, legal, genealogical, and organizational research to with a view to providing formal recommendations, to a cross-ministry roundtable, regarding Métis organizations' assertions of Section 35 Métis Aboriginal rights. Recommendations put forward by the Advisor support decisions on the credibility of the assertions of Aboriginal rights for the purposes of consultation on land and natural resources decisions. 

Key Responsibilities of the role includes: 

  • Lead research and analysis on a portfolio of Métis credible assertions submitted to the Government of Alberta and oversee the work of MCA Analysist supporting the Advisor’s files.
  • Ensure effective communication with Métis organizations and cross-ministry partners.
  • Maintaining awareness of relevant case law, the impacts of emerging case law and judicial reviews, administrative procedures, and the political environment.
  • Develop and administer grants for Métis organizations submitting to the credible assertion process.

Qualifications

4 years University graduation in a related field (History, Native Studies, Policy) plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

 

Required: 

  • Research and Analysis: Conducting in-depth research and detailed analysis 
  • Project Management: Manage multi-phase projects, including organizing timelines, coordinating team efforts, and delivering results within established deadlines.


Assets: 

  • Experience with Indigenous Rights: Indigenous rights or engagement with Métis organizations.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Legal Frameworks: Canadian constitutional law, case law, and policies affecting Métis rights.
  • Grant Development Experience: Developing and administering grants, including writing grant applications and managing funding processes.
  • Conflict Resolution Skills: Navigate and resolve conflicts effectively, particularly in sensitive or high-stakes situations.
  • Strong Organizational Skills: Record-keeping and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
