The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO) is seeking a Provincial Prosecutor to join our team. In this role, you will represent the public interest in the Alberta Court of Justice, prosecute provincial offences, and help uphold public safety and confidence in Alberta's justice system. From routine matters to complex cases, your work will directly impact communities across the province while contributing to fair, effective, and principled justice outcomes.

As a Provincial Prosecutor, you will manage provincial offence prosecutions from file review through to disposition. You will also have opportunities to provide legal guidance, mentor emerging professionals, and contribute to the evolution of provincial prosecution practices across Alberta.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Representing the Attorney General in trials, pre-trial conferences, sentencing hearings, and other court proceedings while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, policies, and procedures.
• Screening and assessing cases involving adult and youth defendants to determine charge appropriateness, public interest considerations, and the reasonable likelihood of conviction.
• Preparing and presenting prosecution cases by analyzing legal and factual issues, assessing evidence, preparing witnesses, and delivering oral and written submissions.
• Developing and implementing prosecution strategies that balance legal, policy, and public interest considerations while anticipating and responding to defence arguments.
• Managing disclosure obligations and negotiating resolutions with law enforcement, defence counsel, agents, and self-represented defendants.
• Contributing to the continuous improvement of prosecution practices, policies, and procedures affecting provincial offence prosecutions across Alberta

Qualifications

Requirements:

• University graduation in a related field such as Criminology, Law, Public Administration and/or Social Sciences
• 4 years of progressively responsible related experience working with the Justice System in some capacity, for example as Paralegal, in Policing, or as a Provincial Prosecutor.
• Valid Drivers License

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

• Knowledge of the Alberta Rules of Court, Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Provincial Offences Procedures Act, the Traffic Safety Act and other provincial statutes.
• Experience using, or knowledge of, Registries Online Access Delivery System (ROADS), Justice Online Information Network (JOIN), TTDS and any other GoA digital platform.

Please Note:

• There is 1 permanent full-time position available. Additional positions may be filled out of this competition.
• This position will work out of the Centrium building in Calgary.
• Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC).
• Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
