Software Development Engineer, RDS Backups

Amazon Web Services

Vancouver, British Columbia

Salary: Information not available

We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and motivated software engineer to join our mission to make AWS the best place to operate relational databases, especially in the world of agentic AI. The RDS Backups team owns backups and disaster recovery features that help customers protect their data as their most valuable asset. This is a rare opportunity to join a highly visible team that is delivering transformative solutions to ensure data durability, protection, and business continuity for RDS and Aurora customers.

Key job responsibilities
You will have the opportunity and be responsible for designing, and developing various disaster recovery and data protection features regardless of the engine across various topologies (in-region, cross-region, cross-account, cross-zone). What you own is load-bearing for every production database on Amazon RDS and Amazon Aurora. When the next real disaster-recovery event happens, the code you wrote is what gets customers their data back.

This is an area that requires solving the hardest engineering challenges in distributed systems at massive scale. As a customer-facing AWS service, our solutions have to be solid, scalable, efficient, and highly fault tolerant. You will be responsible for all aspects of engineering, including development, testing, and deployment of these services. AWS operates large-scale, mission-critical workloads, so you need to be comfortable taking ownership of the operational excellence of your service.

You'll work cross-team with other RDS and Aurora teams (storage, workflow orchestration, DB engine, RDS security) and will also have the opportunity to collaborate cross-org with other AWS Services (EBS, S3, AWS Backup).

Finally, you're excited by the opportunity to learn about and help solve our customers' challenges. In order to break new ground, we'll need to resolve ambiguity and innovate on behalf of our customers. You understand that being passionate about an idea is different than taking it personally, and you believe that debate makes strong ideas even stronger.

About the team
RDS Backups is a Vancouver-based team inside AWS's Relational Database Service organization. Every RDS and Aurora customer depends on our features, from a startup running a single RDS instance to enterprises running complex and multi-region disaster recovery for their most regulated workloads. Our engineers own features end-to-end across control plane, data plane, and platform features. This includes but not limited to customer facing APIs, workflow implementation, integration with each database engine, and operational excellence.
Basic Qualifications:
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Experience owning distributed systems that hold customer data with durability, consistency, and recovery as first-class properties.
- Experience with AWS services at depth, especially Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, AWS KMS, Amazon DynamoDB, AWS Lambda, and Amazon ECS, or comparable large-scale systems.
- Track record of leading multi-engineer, multi-quarter technical initiatives.
