About the Role

The Head of External Relations and Events provides strategic leadership for stakeholder engagement, marketing and communications, special events, volunteer resources, and revenue-generating programs at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV). This role fosters meaningful partnerships, promotes public awareness, and delivers engaging experiences that support visitation, revenue growth, and the preservation of Alberta's Ukrainian heritage. Reporting to the UCHV Director, the position also supervises the Group Bookings and Corporate Sales area, which is a key source of revenue with year-round bookings and sales. 

You Will Be Responsible For:

• Building and maintaining strategic relationships with community organizations, heritage and tourism partners, government agencies, academic institutions, volunteers, sponsors, and other key stakeholders. 
• Leading marketing, communications, media relations, website content, and social media initiatives to increase awareness, engagement, visitation, and support for UCHV. 
• Planning, delivering, and evaluating special events, exhibits, workshops, and special projects that enhance visitor experiences and advance organizational goals. 
• Overseeing the recruitment, coordination, engagement, and recognition of volunteers who support the site's operations and programming. 
• Providing leadership and supervision for the Group Bookings and Corporate Sales program, supporting year-round bookings, customer service excellence, and revenue generation. 
• Representing UCHV locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally, strengthening the site's visibility and reputation within the heritage and tourism sectors. 
• Collaborating with diverse partners and stakeholders to advance strategic initiatives and achieve the goals of the Heritage Division and UCHV business plans. 
• Ensuring all activities align with applicable legislation, professional museum standards, organizational policies, and best practices.

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is renowned for its extensive research and accurate portrayal of Ukrainian settlement in Alberta, particularly within east-central Alberta. This position will ensure that content; programs and events align with this mandate.

Qualifications

Required:  

• University degree in a related field PLUS 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described. 

Equivalency:

• Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

For Example: 

• Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 7 years of experience.
• Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 6 years of experience.
• Related minimum 8 years of experience.

Must-Haves:

• Experience in stakeholder relations, partnership development, and community engagement.
• Experience in marketing and communications.
• Experience planning, coordinating, and evaluating events, programs, exhibits, or public initiatives.
• Experience leading staff, volunteers, or customer-facing operations.
• Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and website/content management tools.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) and ability to provide and maintain a clear driver abstract.

Assets

• Experience working within policy, legislative, or regulatory environments.
• Experience in a museum, heritage, cultural, tourism, or visitor-services environment. 
• Experience managing volunteer programs and volunteer engagement initiatives. 
• Experience with group bookings, corporate sales, sponsorships, or revenue-generating programs. 
• Experience working with government, municipalities, Indigenous communities, or other public-sector partners. 
• Knowledge of Alberta's heritage sector, museum practices, or cultural resource interpretation. 
• Knowledge of the Historical Resources Act, Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and Access to Information Act (ATIA), financial administration, or related public-sector legislation. 
• Experience using Adobe Photoshop or similar digital design tools. 
• Knowledge of Ukrainian culture, language, and the history of Ukrainian settlement in Alberta.

Notes

Additional Position Details:

• Term of Employment: Permanent, Full-time position.
• Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week.
• Location: This position is located at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (located approximately 50 km east of Edmonton near Elk Island National Park).
• This position is fully on-site and requires daily attendance at the work location. No hybrid or remote work options are available. Public transportation is not available to this site.
