Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS) is the province’s not-for-profit provider of security, safety, training, and identification services. THE ROLE


Position: Security Guard – Full time and Part time

Competition Number: CNS 2026-07-02
Reports to: Site Supervisor  
Responsible For: Access control, guard house duties, patrols, report writing

Working Hours: Rotating 12-hour shifts. 

Work Conditions:  

  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-traffic environment 
  • Flexible availability, including nights, weekends and holidays  
  • Must be able and physically capable to stand or sit for long periods and work in various weather conditions  
  • Willingness to work in challenging weather conditions  

Wage: 18.24

Closing Date: July 20th, 2026


Duties & Responsibilities

While duties vary by assignment, the responsibilities of this role may include, but are not limited to:


  • Access Control/Monitoring of CCTV
  • Daily review of various reports and advise Nova Scotia Power Staff 
  • Completing administrative duties as required
  • Complete shift reports as required
  • Recording/documentation of commercial vehicle weights of coal, entering/leaving of site
  • Ensure monthly Operational Health & Safety reports are completed and submitted
  • Administrative control of records, incidents, and security infraction reports
  • Conduct a patrols/visual check of Plant Areas for breaches of security and/or maintenance issues and safety hazards.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate delivery of communication, including all Incident Reporting to Site supervisor
  • Keeping the Site supervisor apprised of all events and incidents as applicable
  • Provide direction, assistance during emergencies

    Additional Responsibilities:
  • Managing staff briefings for daily shift changes 
  • Preparing reports relating to site incident or safety concerns
  • Manage security and safety of personnel visits by maintenance staff and contractors
  • Being a highly active/visible champion for workplace health and safety

Eligibility Requirements


Candidates must:

  • Be aged 19 or older.
  • Not have a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
  • Be eligible to apply for, and pass.
    • Government of Canada Enhanced Reliability
    • Emergency First Aid & CPR
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English.


Qualifications & Skills

The selected candidate will be a professional and detail driven individual with a strong work ethic and “Can Do” attitude. Both physical and mental fitness is required. This often involves working in all types of environmental conditions at varying times throughout the day or night.


Key qualifications and skills to be successful include, but are not limited to:

    • Key qualifications and skills to be successful include, but are not limited to:
      • Comfortable in use of computers in Microsoft suite 
      • Possess excellent customer and client service skills.
      • Possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
      • Demonstrated ability to maintain composure and exercise sound judgement and decision making during emergency or high stress situations.
      • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize and adapt to changing situations.
      • Highly professional and discreet


    Although not required to apply, the following attributes are considered assets:

    • Use of Force Certified
    • Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces or RCMP
    • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention trained
    • Valid Nova Scotia's Driver's License, or reliable transportation to/from the worksites
    • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset
