Alberta Teaching Profession Commission (ATPC)
Are you looking for a rewarding career change? Do you want to expand your expertise and develop your skills as a senior level professional in the Alberta Public Service? Do you have the drive to be a team player and contribute to the work of a regulatory organization?
The Education Act provides the statutory authority for the Alberta Teaching Profession Commission and the appointment of an arm's length Commissioner to oversee teacher and teacher leader conduct and competency complaints for the profession. This process applies to all teacher and teacher leaders under the Education Act (the Act).
The Alberta Teaching Profession Commission oversees a new model, which came into force on January 1, 2023, for teacher and teacher leader disciplinary matters, which brought Alberta in line with best practices used in comparable provinces and other regulated professions. The Alberta Teaching Profession Commission protects students and enhances accountability and transparency for disciplinary matters as a regulated profession.
Reporting to the Manager of Professional Assurance, this position is responsible for developing and implementing strategic and operational initiatives, including procedures, and communication products. The role coordinates defined projects and may lead components of larger initiatives impacting the branch or Commission. A key function is supporting the discipline and complaint process in accordance with the Education Act and the Professional Conduct and Competency for Teachers and Teacher Leaders Regulation through the interpretation of legislation, regulations, and standards, and by assessing complaints, drafting allegation statements, and preparing decisions for the Commissioner’s consideration. The position directly influences operational effectiveness and ensures quality assurance across the branch's services.
The role requires strategic thinking, creativity, and the ability to navigate complex, politically sensitive issues with significant implications for the teaching profession. The incumbent must understand the broader discipline process and its intersections across the Commission, maintaining a long-term strategic perspective and high accountability. Responsibilities include leading and participating in initiatives to improve quality and accountability in teacher discipline, identifying best practices, and adapting new initiatives to the Alberta context. Ongoing awareness of the broader political and societal environment is essential to achieving the objectives of both the Commission and the Department.
