Description

The Naval Training Support Specialist provides Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) subject-matter expertise in naval operations, shipboard systems, equipment engineering, and maintenance practices in support of the Training Systems Integration (TSI) team. The role ensures that training solutions, courseware, and simulation-based products accurately reflect real-world operational, technical, and maintenance requirements of modern naval platforms.

The incumbent collaborates with instructional designers, engineering teams, program managers, and naval business development representatives to develop, validate, and refine training requirements aligned with fleet doctrine, engineering standards, readiness needs, and operator and maintainer workflows. The role also supports the evaluation of training system design, integration of equipment models, and verification of system-level fidelity within training environments.

The role is part of the Naval Training Support Team responsible for Instructional System Design (ISD). Current efforts focus on the River-class Destroyer project, supporting training solutions for operators and maintainers of the Integrated Bridge Navigation System and Integrated Communication System.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing authoritative input on naval operations, equipment functionality, engineering processes, and maintenance procedures across relevant ship classes and systems

  • Advising the TSI team during requirements definition, training design, system integration, and validation activities

  • Ensuring training products align with naval doctrine, technical data, engineering specifications, and shipboard operational realities

  • Reviewing and validating training scenarios, performance objectives, and technical accuracy within courseware and simulation models

  • Liaising with naval stakeholders, fleet personnel, shipbuilders, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)

  • Supporting hazard analysis, task analysis, training needs assessments, and system-level technical evaluations

  • Contributing to program documentation, technical reviews, and acceptance activities to meet program standards and customer requirements

  • Analyzing Vendor Furnished Information to define job-based training package performance and enabling objectives

  • Reviewing and updating Training Needs Analysis (TNA) and Training Media Analysis (TMA)

  • Supporting the development and delivery of project documentation, including:

    • Training Technology Project Management Plan

    • Instructional Material Technical Review Plan

    • Instructional Material Verification Plan

    • Training Program Report

    • Instructional Material Development Plan

    • Training Program Schedule

    • Target Population Analysis Report

  • Developing reusable scenario libraries and datasets

  • Preparing, planning, and executing naval training system solutions

  • Researching maritime industry developments applicable to training solutions

  • Supporting the Integrated Training Solution Lead in formulating complex training solutions aligned with the RCN Future Naval Training Strategy (FNTS) and CONOPS

  • Performing trade studies to select appropriate training solutions from CAE and OEM offerings

  • Supporting Naval Business Development activities, including customer engagement and cost estimates for bids and proposals related to future RCN projects

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) or a comparable national naval service

  • Demonstrated experience in naval operations, shipboard systems, engineering, maintenance, or naval training systems

  • Knowledge of the Canadian Forces Individual Training and Education System (CFITES) or comparable System Approach to Training (SAT)

  • Experience conducting training needs analysis for individual and collective operator and maintainer training

  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Proficiency with Windows-based systems and Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Visio)

  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams, both on-site and remotely

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet tight deadlines

  • Eligibility to meet Canada Controlled Goods Program (CGP) requirements, Level II (NATO SECRET) security clearance, and ITAR requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or valid work permit)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience planning and conducting naval training as an Officer or Non-Commissioned Member (NCM)

  • Strong technical background in relevant naval occupations

  • Demonstrated naval leadership experience

  • Knowledge of naval systems and associated training, testing, and student evaluation methods

  • Familiarity with modern training technologies, including e-learning, simulation, VR/AR, and synthetic environments

  • Knowledge of CAF Military Employment Structure and its application to training development and execution strategies
