JOB SUMMARY

Signs and Pavement Markings is responsible for managing the design, installation, modification, maintenance and removal of traffic signs, specialty signs, and pavement markings. 

You are responsible for installing pavement markings on roadways and highways within the City of Ottawa, and maintaining tools and equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12

Minimum of 7 months of experience working on a road painting crew that may include cone truck driver or paint machine operator

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE

  • Ontario Traffic Manuals and Highway Traffic Act of Ontario
  • WHMIS
  • City of Ottawa standards and procedures (e.g. skip system operations) for installing pavement markings on city streets, roadways and highways
  • City of Ottawa Traffic By-laws
  • Operations of paint marking installation components (e.g. temperature, and high pressure gauges, hydraulic systems, computers, side cameras, etc.) of a specialized vehicle; and procedures and processes for maintaining and repairing paint marking components, including screens, vats, paint tubing and for mixing and handling chemical and toxic solutions
  • Methods, techniques and standards for preparing work sites, including removing/erasing surface markings prior to the start of work
  • Commercial Vehicle Operating Regulations (CVOR); 
  • Road and highways network and pavement marking system within the City of Ottawa; and
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

  • Ability to operate and calibrate hydraulic, computerized and high pressure gauges, and carry out routine/preventative maintenance on specialized equipment;

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Driver’s License Requirement:  A valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated  
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
