JOB SUMMARY

The Signal & Street Lighting Design & Construction Coordination unit is responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating the efficient installation of new traffic control signals and related infrastructure which includes:

  • Installation of new traffic signals/rebuilding of existing traffic signals, in conjunction with road construction and intersection modification projects;
  • Management of the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, traffic cameras and red-light cameras;
  • Civil engineering aspects of traffic signal design, such as flashing beacons, overhead sign support structures, underground traffic plant, vehicle detectors, variable message signs, directly related signs and pavement markings.

 

You are responsible for the design of traffic signal layouts that meet technical, legal and field requirements, and act as interim inspector of underground traffic plant to ensure adherence to contract specifications, drawings and on-site safety, and to ensure that all associated work is coordinated with minimum disruption to the public and municipal services.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 2 year community college program in drafting technology

Minimum of 5 years of experience in traffic signal design, geometric design and civil engineering Inspection/field layout

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or Certified Technician (C.Tech.) with OACETT is desirable

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and computer aided drafting techniques, Microstation, surveying techniques as related to roadway geometry/construction using GPS and conventional methods.
  • Road design
  • Surveying techniques related to road geometry
  • Traffic plant design and installation
  • Construction inspection techniques
  • Ontario Traffic Manuals (OTM) and Books 5,6,7,11,12
  • Ontario Provincial Standards and Specifications (OPSS) and Ontario Provincial Standards of Design (OPSD) and city standards
  • Microstation, AutoCAD and Autoturn and conventional drafting techniques
  • Highway Traffic Act
  • Photo editing software
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and city policies and procedures

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Driver’s License Requirement:  A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.  
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
