Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls. 

The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.

In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Nature and Scope:

Reporting to the Manager, Logistics and Materials Management, the incumbent will be responsible to supervise two teams, one in Central Region, one in Eastern Region of System Support Technicians, Logistics (SSTL), Casual, and Student positions as well support Return to Work Program Health and Wellness staff members from various Divisions within EMC.

The position will provide education, monitoring, reporting and innovation for the Division, Department and that of EMCI Programs.

The System Support Logistics Supervisor will have experience with leadership principles, familiarization of budgets, and vehicle monitoring system data analysis and reporting (Acetech/RFID). The incumbent will provide input, oversight and direction into high asset vehicle monitoring, tracking, deployment and WASP inventory management to support the integrity of EMCI.

The role will also encompass all aspects of medical supply/equipment, narcotics procurement, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders and, in conjunction with the Operations Division, Clinical Services, Human Resources, Health & Wellness, Data Management Team, Information Technology team and Medavie Health Services this position will assure the overall success in the supply and procurement software system and projects related to Logistics within the Province.

The System Support Logistics Supervisor will assist with eOcccurance monitoring and action accountability, Leadership Investigations, data capture and analysis as well as targeted reporting. This position will also be responsible for the supervision of Logistics system vehicles (7+), reviewing driver’s operational checks and reports, conduct or coordinate driver evaluation during the hiring and remedial processes and provide coaching/mentoring as required.

The System Support Logistics Supervisor will oversee, supervise, schedule service delivery routes, general facility maintenance and support to Operations, and provide direction to the logistics teams of System Support Logistics staff.

The System Support Logistics Supervisor will also participate and be an active member to support EMC Committees i.e. OHS, Equipment Standards (Operations/LifeFlight), and Vehicle User Group as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The position entails, but is not limited to the following:

Coaching/Performance Management:

  • Support and lead the Logistics Department Teams in both Central/Eastern Regions in delivering a high level of service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supervising and delegating day-to-day tasks and assignments for the Logistics Teams.
  • Providing coaching, guidance, and performance management to Logistics Team members.

Collaboration & Relationship Management:

  • Collaborate with leaders and stakeholders regarding supply/procurement sourcing and cost strategies.
  • Participate in new project and multi-stakeholder groups providing feedback on the involvement of, impact to and workload for the Logistics Team and service delivery with any new or existing projects or processes.
  • Foster relationships with other Departments and operational areas within EMC, MHS, operating companies and external third-party vendors/distributors.

Reporting & Analysis:

  • Perform daily min/max level audits for the determination of Base/Station medical supply/equipment and narcotic levels.
  • Consistently monitor trends for vendor stock shortages and procurement delays.
  • Mitigate and implement advance strategies to ensure consistent stock levels are maintained to the front line.
  • Work with the Medavie Procurement Team to assist other stakeholder with operational effectiveness and service delivery.

  • Provide leadership by participating in, supporting, and ensuring accountabilities for all initiatives that foster a culture of team safety and a safe work environment best practice.
  • Promote safety culture through the team and organization by promoting safe work procedures, processes and lead by example attitude.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Education / Experience:

  • Graduate of a (minimum 2 years) College of Business, Business Administration, Finance/accounting, Information Technology, or Healthcare Administration.
  • A combination of a proven track record as a leader along with knowledge, training and/or experience in Supply/Procurement, Shipping/Receiving, Logistics, Facilities Management (preferably health care related) or healthcare administration will be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Three to five years related leadership experience.
  • Three to five years’ experience in office administration/management including scheduling, and payroll functions; or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience working in a unionized/non-unionized environment, healthcare or major supply/procurement organization with a proven ability to develop relationships and communicate with both Management and Staff.

Working Conditions:

The employee will spend various periods of sitting, standing, lifting, bending, climbing. Required to maintain one position for possible long periods of time, such as sitting at meetings, or at a desk setting. Employee will be reading or inputting data, report writing, operating a word processor, computer, and talking on the telephone. Use and exposure to general office equipment such as fax, photocopier, printer, and personal computer.

Exposure to low to moderate noise levels. Travel within the province may be required occasionally for delivery of medical supply/equipment, narcotics and cleaning supplies. Assistance in providing general maintenance to Base/Stations and the training/coaching/mentoring of the beforementioned to new onboarded Team Members
