The Ministry of Affordability and Utilities leads and coordinates government’s ongoing efforts to make everyday life more affordable, manages and develops policy for the development of the province's utilities sector and oversees a reliable and affordable electricity system for Albertans.
The Priority Initiatives Branch leads and coordinates the Government of Alberta’s policy development and actions on a range of initiatives that fit within the Ministry’s mandate and support the province to meet the increasing energy demands of our growing economy and population in a safe, reliable, and affordable manner. The Priority Initiatives Branch is primarily focused on advancing and streamlining legislative, regulatory, and policy development for nuclear energy in Alberta.

Reporting to the Director, Policy and Partnerships, the Senior Policy Analyst will provide analysis and advice to support development of nuclear energy policy and a regulatory framework that ensures nuclear energy projects in Alberta meet desired environmental, economic, and social outcomes. They will also be responsible for supporting engagement on the use of nuclear energy in Alberta and cross-ministry and federal-provincial government coordination as the Ministry advances work on nuclear energy policy.
The role will contribute strong analytic skills to the branch and assist the ministry in achieving the Government of Alberta's priorities. The position requires a dedicated team player with strong leadership skills to understand, facilitate, coordinate and implement decisions that are integral to the success of the Government's vision related to nuclear energy and other priorities that are assigned.
Key responsibilities include conducting in depth research, analysis, and policy options development. The role also involves representing the department through active participation and leadership in multi stakeholder projects and committees. Duties include preparing expert advice for the department and other ministries, supporting policy review and development such as drafting regulations, consulting on proposals, and securing necessary approvals to assist with policy implementation in collaboration with management. The position also involves project management, engagement with internal and external stakeholders, and providing clear communication and briefings to Executive leadership, senior agency staff, and senior officials.
Responsibilities are:
1) The Priority Initiatives Branch and Ministry of Affordability and Utilities has ready access to information, analysis and advice on issues assigned to the branch.
2) Ministry stakeholders, internal and external, have the opportunity to provide input to policy and to understand government actions.
3) Complex projects and initiatives are appropriately planned and well executed.
4) The Priority Initiatives Branch actively contributes to priority initiatives led by other groups in the Ministry of Affordability and Utilities, and other departments.
