Are you a lawyer with exceptional litigation skills and a passion for justice? The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Crown Prosecutor to join the dedicated Prosecutions team at the Medicine Hat Regional Office in Alberta.

Your Role in Delivering Justice
As a Crown Prosecutor, you will help serve the public by delivering justice through fearless, fair, and effective prosecutions. Your daily responsibilities will include:

• Bail hearings, charge screening, early case resolution, and alternative measures.
• Deciding whether to proceed to trial or discontinue a prosecution.
• Conducting all prosecutions, entering stays of proceedings, withdrawing charges, and plea resolutions.
• Providing disclosure and drafting legal opinions, briefings, and court documents.
• Electing to proceed summarily or by indictment, taking positions on sentences, and launching appeals.
• Working with victims, witnesses, police, and other stakeholders in the justice system.

• The public interest is served, and just outcomes are achieved.
• Courts are provided with fair, accurate, and complete evidence and legal arguments.
• Serious and complex cases are prosecuted with the highest level of competence.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta is required.

• Crown Prosecutor 1: a minimum of 1-4 years legal experience is required.
• Crown Prosecutor 2: a minimum of 4 years legal experience is required.
• Crown Prosecutor 3: a minimum of 11 years legal experience is required.
  
  

Other requirement

• For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.
• A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License and travel within the province is required.
• A minimum of one year of call to the bar and relevant legal experience is required

Asset 
Experience in Criminal Litigation is an asset.

Notes

This opportunity is located in Medicine Hat.

The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Travel within Alberta to circuit court locations is a requirement for this role.

Final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo security screening. Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate.

Successful candidate(s) may be eligible for relocation expenses up to $10,000.00
