Location: Hybrid – Toronto, ON
Role Overview
We are seeking an Intermediate Software Developer to support technology solutions within Institutional Insurance, including platforms that enable underwriting, policy administration, claims, risk management, actuarial analytics, and regulatory reporting. This role focuses on building and enhancing secure, scalable applications that support insurance products, data pipelines, and internal business users across actuarial, operations, finance, and risk functions.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with business analysts, architects, and senior engineers to translate insurance business requirements into technical solutions while adhering to enterprise architecture standards, security controls, and regulatory expectations common within institutional insurance environments.
Key Skills & Technical Expertise
This role requires hands-on experience with Python for backend services, data processing, APIs, and automation, particularly in support of insurance workflows, analytical models, and system integrations. Strong experience with Microsoft Azure is essential, including building and deploying applications using Azure Function Apps and Azure App Service, and supporting infrastructure through Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform. The developer will work with SQL Server (MSSQL) to design, query, and optimize relational data models commonly used for policy, premium, claims, and financial data.
The role also involves front-end development using JavaScript or TypeScript, with working knowledge of modern frameworks such as React or Angular to support internal insurance portals, dashboards, or operational tooling. Exposure to AI-enabled capabilities, including prompt engineering and intelligent search solutions using Azure AI Search / Azure Cognitive Search, is important for supporting document search, policy language analysis, underwriting insights, and operational efficiency.
Nice-to-have experience includes familiarity with the Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate) to support reporting, low-code workflows, and operational automation within insurance teams. Experience integrating OpenAI/GPT, working with vector databases, or using Azure Cosmos DB to support unstructured data, knowledge search, or advanced analytics is considered a strong asset.
Roles & Responsibilities
Contribute to the end-to-end software development lifecycle for Institutional Insurance technology solutions, including requirements analysis, development, testing, deployment, and support.
Develop, configure, and maintain applications that support insurance business processes such as underwriting, policy servicing, claims processing, actuarial analysis, and regulatory reporting.
Write high-quality, secure, and maintainable code that adheres to enterprise standards for logging, error handling, performance, and non-functional requirements.
Translate business and functional requirements into technical designs, working closely with business analysts and senior engineering staff.
Design, develop, test, and support applications using Python, SQL, Azure services, and Visual Studio, with exposure to JRE-based components where applicable.
Analyze the impact of design and implementation decisions on system performance, data integrity, scalability, and downstream insurance systems.
Monitor application performance and support ongoing optimization, defect resolution, and maintenance activities.
Participate in production support activities, including debugging, root-cause analysis, and issue remediation.
Support system audits, risk assessments, and compliance-related reviews aligned with institutional insurance and regulatory standards.
Participate in code reviews, incorporating feedback and contributing to team-wide code quality and best practices.
Write and execute unit, integration, and regression tests to validate system functionality and data accuracy.
Maintain technical documentation, design artefacts, and implementation notes using tools such as JIRA and Confluence.
Follow established deployment, CI/CD, and environment management practices appropriate for regulated insurance environments.
Work independently on assigned deliverables while escalating complex issues or risks appropriately.
Qualifications
3–5 years of professional experience in software development using Python, Azure cloud technologies, SQL/MSSQL, and modern development tools such as Visual Studio.
Experience or exposure to AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Azure Copilot) is an asset.
Familiarity with enterprise systems integration, RESTful APIs, and data-centric applications.
Understanding of software development best practices, SDLC methodologies, and version control.
Ability to understand testing requirements, create test cases, and support structured testing efforts.
Working knowledge of operating systems, development environments, and cloud deployment practices.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities.
Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
Prior exposure to insurance, financial services, or other regulated industries is strongly preferred.
