Your Opportunity

An opportunity exists for a Senior Mining Practitioner to join our environmental permitting practice. You will join a team that delivers outstanding expertise to a wide variety of clients, in a role focused on mining. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of environmental permitting, regulatory compliance and closure solutions to our mining sector clients. This role requires someone who can drive solutions, and work with multi-disciplinary engineering and technical teams on baseline and impact assessment projects, feasibility studies, rehabilitation and closure projects. The role will involve leading multi-disciplinary scopes of work within a team of technical experts and interacting directly with clients and regulators.

The position can be based out of any of our major Ontario offices (Waterloo, Hamilton, Mississauga, Markham, Toronto, Ottawa, Sudbury or Thunder Bay), will require periodic travel to other Stantec offices and client offices, with an opportunity to work remotely two to three days per week .

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Implementing the environmental assessment (EA) and permitting process as it applies to mining projects

  • Client liaison and business development

  • Writing and coordinating proposals and reports

  • Conduct desktop studies in support of regulatory requirements

  • Develop and implement consultation programs

  • Effectively communicate and liaise with a variety of project stakeholders, including internal multi-disciplinary teams, clients, regulatory agencies, and members of the public.

  • Manage projects, including scheduling, health and safety, subcontractors, budgets, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures

  • Support other environmental services projects as warranted

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong understanding of the mining sector, with a focus on Ontario, Quebec, and across North America (experience at an operating mine site is an asset)

  • Proven understanding of the environmental aspects of the Ontario mining sector through all stages of the mining life cycle

  • Experience leading EAs and navigating the permitting processes for mining projects of significant size and/or complexity, ideally in Ontario or elsewhere in Canada

  • Possess a strong knowledge of Ontario and federal mining-related acts, regulations, policies and guidance, and knowledge of mineral exploration methods, mine waste disposal methods, and mineral processing methods

  • Strategic thinker who establishes a permitting approach with consideration of all discipline interactions during project start-up and commencement

  • Strong leadership and business development skills, including experience in building and maintaining productive relationships with a mining client base

  • Entrepreneurial orientation with a strong understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting services provider

  • Experience liaising with government and Indigenous communities

Education and Experience

Environmental Scientist, Environmental Planner, Geologist, Engineer, or background in other related multi-disciplinary areas and associated professional designation, where applicable

Minimum 15 years’ professional experience, in progressively more senior positions, with a focus on mining

Experience with explorers, producers, and consulting service providers to the mining sector, or a combination thereof

Demonstrated technical skills and, ideally, advanced educational credentials.

Experience within a consulting organization is considered a strong asset

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range:

• Locations in Lower Mainland -- BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$114,600.00 - $164,600.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
