The role of a Supervising Civil Engineer is to work as a team member on small and large projects under the guidance and direct supervision of a Senior Engineer to develop skills in evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering systems or products for a project.
A Supervising Civil Engineer will perform a variety of tasks which may include assisting with the plans and designs of structures and facilities such as bridges, railroads, roads, airports, harbors, dams, irrigation projects, pipelines, tunnels, power plants and other projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
Direct, organize and control work to administer medium to large structural contracts
Work on moderate to complex problems requiring a thorough analysis of situation or data
Supervise a workgroup
Ensure work on contracts proceeds according to plans, procedures, contract specifications and quality
Check contract documents and review design for obvious errors
Approve work and progress payments
Carry out inspection activities to ensure conformance
Check and inspect contractor's work with drawings and related contract documents
Conduct site surveys, confirming the scope of work, obtaining relevant information, equipment and materials
Arrange site access and conduct survey
Compile field data in report form for review of the project designer
Prepare contract specifications, construction staging and traffic arrangement schemes
Assess scope of work
Monitor staff levels, coaching junior staff as required
Manage the construction budget, act as liaison with clients and issue invoices as appropriate
Address contractor questions and misconceptions by working closely with the superintendent and other construction staff;
Keep track of contractor activities
Accountable for confirming that work on contracts proceeds per approved design and contract specifications
Perform work within established guidelines, procedures and practices
Demonstrated Construction Administration experience as a Contract Administrator or the equivalent of 5 or more similar Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) or municipal projects with construction values of least between $5,000,000 and $15,000,000 or greater is an asset
Either registration as a Professional Engineer with PEO or as a Technician or Technologist with O.A.C.E.T.T. with Road Construction Contract Administration (RCCA) designation
Prior MTO T131 and T131A Advanced Claims Dispute Resolution training is an asset
Knowledge and understanding of Ontario Provincial Standards and Specifications (OPSS), Ontario Provincial Standard Drawings (OPSD), Contract Documents including Agreement, General Conditions of Contracts, and Special Provisions
Knowledge of construction survey and layout
Knowledge of construction methods and materials
Knowledge of the requirements of relevant legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety act and Environmental Protection Act
Experience working with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access)
Experience working with MS Project or Primavera is considered an asset
Excellent verbal and written communication, time management, negotiation and conflict resolution, problem-solving, and organizational skills
A valid Ontario driver's license and access to a vehicle"
Education and Experience
Post-secondary degree or diploma in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology/Technician;
Minimum 8 years experience in Road and/or Heavy Construction
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
