About the Economic Crime Unit
The Economic Crimes Unit handles Economic Crimes (EC) consisting of complex and sophisticated multi-jurisdictional and transnational fraudulent schemes that result in significant financial losses to individuals, corporations, and various levels of government. The approach to prosecuting these matters is equally as complex and sophisticated. 

Key Responsibilities 

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, the successful candidate will:

• Prosecute complex cases involving corporate fraud, securities fraud, mass-marketing fraud, large employee defalcations, and corruption, with implications at provincial, national, and international levels.
• Handle business-related regulatory offences under legislation such as the AGLC, Scrap Metal Dealers, and Privacy Acts, focusing on organized illegal behaviour contravening regulatory laws.
• Provide legal advice and counsel to police during pre-charge investigations, including matters involving lawful access issues.
• Appear at all levels of court.
• Work closely with victims and their families, ensuring their interests are represented throughout the legal process.
• Prepare and present evidence and legal arguments that are thorough, fair, and accurate to ensure just outcomes in all cases.

• Assigned prosecutions of all serious and complex cases are conducted in a highly competent manner.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta is required.

• Crown Prosecutor 2: a minimum of 4 years legal experience is required.
• Crown Prosecutor 3: a minimum of 11 years legal experience is required.
• Crown Prosecutor 4: a minimum of 15+ years legal experience is required.
  
  

Prosecution experience in criminal law is required.

• For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.
• A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License is a requirement. Travel within the province is required.

Notes

There is a Temporary position available and this competition will be used to fill future vacancies, and is located in Calgary or Edmonton.

The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Travel within Alberta to circuit court locations is a requirement for this role.

Final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo security screening. Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate.

Successful candidate(s) may be eligible for relocation expenses up to $10,000.00
