The Trade, Investment and Food Safety (TIFS) Division expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bioproduct manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.
Albertans expect safe, wholesome meat and dairy products from livestock animals that have been treated with care and respect. The Meat and Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS ) licenses and regulates provincialmeat facilities (slaughter and processing), mobile butchers and dairy processors in accordance with the Meat Inspection Act and Regulation and the Dairy Industry Act and Dairy Industry Regulation.
MDIS works with licence applicants and licensed operators to ensure they are complying with legislated requirements and standards. The section also engages and collaborates with stakeholders and other regulatory partners, such as the Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) in matters regarding food safety risk and the safe production of meat and dairy products for Albertans.

We’re looking for a strong, people focused leader to join our team as Operations Manager, South.
In this role, you’ll provide strategic guidance and operational leadership to a regional team of 30+ staff and oversee an annual operating budget of approximately $3.5 million across the Airdrie and Lethbridge regions.
You’ll be responsible for developing and implementing operational policies and procedures that support effective regulatory oversight and build confidence in Alberta’s food safety system. Leading a dedicated team of two regional supervisors, you will guide the delivery of daily inspection operations carried out by approximately 30 meat inspectors—ensuring consistency, professionalism, and compliance with legislative requirements.

A university degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Animal Health, Agriculture, veterinary sciences or related, plus six (6) years progressively responsible related experience leading teams conducting regulatory assurance.
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
Preference will be given to those with direct management and leadership experience.
