About the Opportunity

Our client, a respected public sector organization, is seeking an experienced Payroll Consultant to support payroll operations during a period of transition and organizational change. This role will ensure continuity, accuracy, and consistency in payroll processing while the organization stabilizes its payroll function and evaluates future HR technology solutions.

You will work closely with the HR and Finance teams and external partners while supporting a small payroll function that services a unionized workforce. This is an opportunity to step into a critical operational role, providing steady leadership and expertise during key payroll cycles while contributing to a broader HR transformation initiative.

Your Responsibilities

  • You will lead end-to-end payroll processing to ensure accurate and timely pay for approximately 350+ employees.
  • In this role, you will oversee third-party payroll-related processes, including pension, benefits, and union reporting requirements.
  • You will provide operational oversight and guidance to the payroll department, supporting their development and day-to-day activities.
  • You will manage payroll reporting and reconciliations, ensuring alignment with financial reporting and compliance standards.
  • You will support peak payroll periods such as fiscal year-end processing, merit, and incentive cycles.
  • You will document payroll processes and help maintain consistency across payroll operations during the interim period.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive payroll experience, including operating in a standalone or lead payroll capacity
  • Hands-on experience with payroll platforms (e.g., Dayforce, ADP, UKG) and payroll within a managed services environment
  • Exposure to unionized payroll environments and defined benefit pension plans
  • Strong attention to detail, process orientation, and ability to maintain accuracy under tight timelines
  • Experience with additional HRIS or HCM systems such as Workday or SuccessFactors is considered an asset
  • PCP or PLP designation is considered an asset
