Your Opportunity

We are expanding our Specifications team and are seeking Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Specification Writers to support the delivery of high-quality, technically accurate project documentation across a wide range of building types.

Whether you are early in your specification career or a seasoned technical leader, this is an opportunity to contribute to impactful projects within a collaborative, multidisciplinary design environment.

The successful candidates will be detail-oriented, collaborative, and adaptable to the evolving demands of design and construction projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities will vary based on experience level and may include:

  • Preparing project specifications for assignments of varying scale, complexity, and building type in collaboration with project managers and design teams.

  • Assisting with or leading the development, maintenance, and enhancement of firmwide master specifications.

  • Coordinating in-house specifications with consultant documentation to ensure alignment across disciplines.

  • Planning and managing specification workload to meet project deadlines.

  • Researching, evaluating, and recommending building products, systems, materials, and construction methods.

  • Maintaining awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving code requirements.

  • Building and maintaining professional relationships with product representatives and technical specialists.

  • For senior-level candidates: providing technical leadership, mentoring junior team members, and contributing to specification standards and quality control initiatives.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong ability to interpret, evaluate, and communicate requirements for materials, products, and workmanship.

  • CSI Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) credential preferred (typically expected at intermediate or senior levels).

  • Excellent judgment, attention to detail, and organizational skills.

  • Familiarity with e-Spec or similar specification software preferred.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Candidates must currently reside in Canada and be legally authorized to work in Canada. Positions are available in multiple locations across Canada and may be hybrid or remote, depending on the location.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management preferred.

Experience requirements by level:

  • Junior Specification Writer: 2–5 years of experience in the design and construction industry, with exposure to construction documentation and specifications.

  • Intermediate Specification Writer: 5–10 years of experience, with demonstrated proficiency in preparing and coordinating project specifications.

  • Senior Specification Writer: 10+ years of experience with advanced expertise in specification writing, leadership capability, and experience managing complex or large-scale projects.

This position typically operates in an office environment with extended periods of computer-based work. Occasional fieldwork may involve exposure to weather conditions, including inclement weather.

Pay Range:

• Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$102,600.00 - $153,900.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
