Reporting to the Unit Head, Timber Auditing Unit, the Timber Production Auditor is responsible for monitoring and auditing timber production levels under timber quotas and Forest Management Agreements. This role ensures sustainability of timber resources on Crown lands through rigorous auditing, compliance evaluation, and protocol development.

As a subject matter expert in timber production monitoring and auditing, you will support consistent application of provincial standards for timber production control, accounting, and reporting. You will also provide critical guidance to field staff during investigations involving suspected non-compliance with forestry legislation.

This role stands out as a unique opportunity to directly influence forest sustainability practices across Alberta while contributing to provincial policy, compliance assurance, and wildfire response efforts.

Your main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Conducting audits of timber companies holding timber quotas and Forest Management Agreements to ensure compliance with forest sustainability objectives.
• Monitoring timber production levels to evaluate adherence to provincial legislation, standards, and reporting requirements.
• Assisting in developing, maintaining, and refining the Timber Production Monitoring Framework to strengthen production oversight.
• Supporting the creation of measurable performance standards for timber production reporting across various tenure types and mill operations.
• Providing expert guidance to departmental field staff during investigations of suspected forestry non-compliance.
• Ensuring consistent application of provincial and departmental standards related to timber production control, accounting, and reporting.
• Acting as a departmental expert in timber production monitoring and auditing aligned with core business objectives.
• Participating in wildfire management teams to assist in protecting Alberta’s forests when required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Two-year diploma in Forest Technology, and 4 years related experience in timber production, forest management, auditing or compliance assurance. 
• or a Degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science or a related field, and 2 years of related experience in timber production, forest management, auditing or compliance assurance.

Equivalency: 

• Directly related experience or education is considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

Special Requirements:

• Eligibility for registration as a Regulated Forestry Professional in Alberta.
• Valid Class 5 Drivers licence.

Assets:

• Knowledge of provincial forestry legislation, timber production control systems, and reporting standards.
• Experience in forest management plans.
• Valid Scaling permit.
• Experience developing audit frameworks, monitoring systems, or compliance standards.
• Experience participating in wildfire management or emergency response operations.
• Familiarity with mill operations, tenure systems, and timber accounting processes.

Notes

Additional Position Details:

• This is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.
• The incumbent may be requested to work overtime, evening and weekends due to the emergency nature of wildfires.
• Edmonton is the preferred location; however, other locations may also be considered.
• Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.
