Here's the Scoop – Summary

The Junior Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of accounting activities in accordance with accounting principles and standards to control the organization's financial resources and ensure that it complies with all relevant regulations, laws, and reporting requirements. 

This includes, but is not limited to, assisting in day-to-day processing of transactions, reconciling accounts, posting journal entries, and maintaining a complete and accurate general ledger so that the organization has a full and accurate statement of its financial position. 

The Junior Accountant reports to the Senior Manager of Financial Operations and is based out of our South Edmonton office working a hybrid schedule, working 3 days in the office, and is based out of our Edmonton corporate office.

What a typical day looks like:

  • Post and process journal entries to ensure all business transactions are recorded in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Prepare general ledger reconciliations such as bank, prepaid expense, accounts payable, accounts receivable, deferred revenue, expense reports, and other general ledger accounts by gathering and balancing information.

  • Assist to maintain financial records for all divisions and the analysis of balance sheets and general ledger accounts in compliance with accepted policies and procedures.

  • Collect, compile, verify and analyze financial information and assist in preparation of financial reports and accounting statements.

  • Participate in period-end and year-end closing procedures.

  • Assist with preparation of various internal financial reports including ad-hoc reports and working papers within scope of responsibility.

  • Assist with preparation for any external audits or independent reviews with support from the Senior Accountant.

  • Assist with Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable entries as needed.

  • Ensure all deadlines are met.

  • Ability to work in a professional setting and ensure complete confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Perform general office duties (filing, photocopying, etc.) and other accounting projects, ad-hoc request, and responsibilities as required or assigned.

  • Maintain up-to-date, complete, and systematic filing system to support general ledger and financial records.

What are we looking for?

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree or Diploma in accounting, finance, or related field required.

  • 2+ year of experience in an accounting or finance role.

  • Working knowledge of General Ledger and Chart of Account structures.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to communicate well with various types of individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • General understanding of computerized accounting systems, experience working with an ERP system.

  • Good understanding of accounting and financial reporting principles and practices.

  • Strong computer skills, with excellent working knowledge of MS Word and Excel.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail while working under tight deadlines.

  • Experience in a multi-currency and multi division environment is considered an asset.

  • Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.

  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
