About the Opportunity

As the Financial Controller, you’ll play a pivotal role in overseeing the Finance department, ensuring accurate reporting, and implementing robust financial policies. You’ll work closely with a passionate executive team, presenting insights and recommendations that shape the organization’s future. In this role, you’ll balance leadership with hands-on financial oversight. From budgeting and forecasting to audits and payroll, your expertise will ensure strong internal controls and compliance with regulations. You’ll also liaise with external auditors, government agencies, and internal stakeholders, building trust and transparency across all financial operations. Your work will empower the Board and leadership team to make informed, strategic decisions that drive long-term success.

Your Responsibilities

  • You’ll lead the Finance department, overseeing accounting, payroll, and reporting functions.
  • In this role, you’ll prepare financial statements, management reports, and forecasts to support strategic decision-making.
  • You’ll safeguard organizational assets and ensure all financial operations comply with Canadian accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • You’ll coordinate audits and liaise with external auditors to maintain transparency and accuracy.
  • You’ll provide guidance on financial policies and implement recommendations approved by the Board.
  • You’ll oversee payroll processes, employee records, and compliance with labor agreements and regulations.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a Financial Controller or in a comparable finance leadership role, ideally in higher education or not-for-profit sectors
  • CPA designation required; bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field preferred
  • 3–5 years in a management role with demonstrated leadership and team development skills
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian Accounting standards, financial systems, and payroll software
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships across all organizational levels
  • High attention to detail, integrity, and commitment to excellence
