As a Brandon Police Service Detention Guard, the successful candidate will:

  • Be responsible for the safety, security, and well-being of each arrestee held in custody and their property. Report all irregularities and concerns, such as injuries, illness, self harm, or property damage.
  • Assists with monitoring arrestees when they are out of the cell.
  • Issue mattresses and blankets to arrestees.
  • Launder used blankets and other items, as required.
  • Maintain a shift log of all detention guard activities.
  • Ability to learn established emergency procedures and respond appropriately to emergency/life threatening situations.
  • Must maintain absolute confidentiality.
  • May be required to provide evidence in court or at an inquest.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain electronic records of the admission, activities, wellness checks, transfers, and the release process of each arrestee.
  • As required, assist Brandon Police Service members to search arrestees.
  • Conduct metal detector searches of all arrestees.
  • Perform physical wellness checks of each arrestee every 15-minutes (more frequently for arrestees identified as high risk).
  • Maintain awareness of arrestees’ activities by using a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, along with monitoring the interior and exterior of the detention section.
  • Follow authorized checklists and job aids necessary to administer and execute detention guard tasks. Conducts interactions with all arrestees in a respectful and dignified manner.
  • Heats and dispenses prepared processed meals to prisoners.
  • Conduct searches of cells prior to occupation and sanitize when they are vacated to ensure they are ready for the next arrestee.
  • Restrict access to the detention section to authorized persons only.

Qualifications:

  • Canadian resident for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Possess current Criminal record and Child Abuse registry checks, additional security checks may be conducted by the Brandon Police Service.
  • Good initiative, able to work with minimal supervision and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to set priorities.
  • Effective inter-personal skills.
  • Efficient computer skills.
  • Experience or credentials in law enforcement and/or Supervisory experience an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak in English.
  • Able to function effectively under stress.

Hours of Work: Part-time

The PT shift rotation is of a four-week duration, with a total of four 12-hour shifts (weekends) and seven 24-hour periods of being on standby.

Wage:

$20.85/Hr
